If I'm thinking about this correctly, your cam will be off quite a bit, but you timing marks will be dead on. The Z6 cam sits at a more advanced position when in a Y8, so it would be the opposite in a Z6 head.
You should have had to modify your Z6 distributor to get your ignition timing correct.
I believe the rule of thumb would be, whatever cam you have, use that cam gear. This would ensure that your cam timing would be correct. Even if your ignition timing is off, you can modify the "ears" on the distributor to get it correct.

Uh, "...your cam will be off quite a bit, but you timing marks will be dead on."
Do you need any more of an explaination? Do I need to walk over there and slap your hand as you're putting the Z6 gear on it? I didn't know I had to hold your hand. Most people would have the minute amount of insight to see by the explaination that, no, it's not a wise idea.

Sorry, he said that I didn't help him at all, and I did answer his question. Sorry.. :(
Oh well.. yes, it is very possible to do, but the average "enthusiast" will probably never get it timed. If using the adjustable cam gear, you'll end up tuning out the retard, and not having any more adjustability in your gear for performance tuning. ::shrug::

you can use it. just get the timing marks as close as possible and then when you go to set your igntion timing find out what way you need to go (adv. or retard) and then adjust the cam gear 4.75 deg. its still allot better to use a z6 one but the y8 can be used. and since the cam gear has 10 deg of total adjustment then you will still have about 5.25 deg left to adjust with and i'm sure that you don't want to adjust your cam by that much. but if you do then just move the cam one tooth over in the other direction and adjust the cam gear to 4.75 deg in the other direction and then adjust from there. i know that i made this a bit confusing but you will get it.

What does it take to degree a cam?
