I am doing a built and turbocharged z6 project, and have ordered the head/IM and misc parts recently..and I have most of it planned out, but a friend (well..acquaintance..online, fellow car enthusiast) who is also doing the z6 swap, had brought something to my attention. They said that if you put the z6 in, but use a cable tranny with it (my DX transmission..I'd like the semi-longer gears to give the turbo time to spool..it'll be a big un', still unsure of exact turbo, however)..that the life of the transmission would be dramatically shorter, due to the fact that 88+ cable transmissions didn't use hardened differential pins, and when you put a higher amount (than roughly 160hp) of power to it, the spider gears start to eat through the pins. I was also told that because of this, I'd need to convert to hydro, and just use the z6 tranny. Finding a kit for a d-series cable to hydro conversion is pretty damn hard (called hasport, no luck).
Because of this, I was wondering if I could just swap in the differential and final drive from a hydro with the hardened differential pins in it? If not, is there any way to solve this problem? Hell..is there even any legitimacy to this claim of the shorter life? I don't know, but I figured I'd ask..because seeing as this build is already beginning, I need to figure out my plans for the transmission. Thanks guys, and I appreciate you taking the time to read all of this. Later.
