VTEC-it stand for variable valve timing and lift electronic control.. in the car engine of course there is fuel and air that is let through a set of valves. there known as the intake valves.. and then exhaust is let out of the exhaust valves..the opening and closing of the valves is done by the opening and closing of the lobes on the camshaft. they make the valves open and spring close the valves... the timing and the speed of how fast these vavles can open and close is by the shape of the lobes on the camshaft..differnt shapes of the lobes are called cam profiles. they have one cam-shaft for low revs and one for high revs and thats exactly what VTEC does. A VTEC camshaft has two sets of lobes on the shaft. there is a set circumstances that have to happen for VTEC. the engine has to be at a certain temperture and there has to be enough oil pressure and a certain rev range.. when that happens a locking pin is pushed into the camshaft by the oil which is let into the shaft by a solenoid and from that point on the high rpm cam profile is used.

VTEC-E-basically same thing but it allows a lean mixture of air and fuel to amke better fuel economy...less fuel and more air is called a lean ixture and a less air and more fuel is called rich just to let you know.. think that is right...for low RPMs a normal engines intake charge velocity is low enough that the fuel and air are not mixed together very well..to amke up for this mixing effect a rich fuel mixture is needed to keep the engine running smoothly..VTEC-E artificially increases the intake charge which creates a swirling effect inside the cylinder.there aren't any extra cam lobes in a VTEC-E engine like there is on a normal VTEC engine..

i think thats enough really correct me if anything is wrong..i typed this shit cuz ive seen some questions on what VTEC is.

sorry man, there's a lot wrong with that description

i can't type it all out now, so if someone beats me to it, go for it.

first of all VTEC stands for variable valve timing and lift electronic control...

VTEC opens both of your intake valves (on a SOHC) or both intake and exhaust valves (DOHC) using a locking pin system connecting both valves (4 on each cylinder, 2 intake & 2 exhaust) and opening them at the same time(both intake valves open, then both exhaust. Not all 4 @ the same time) and slightly higer than usual. The pins are actuated by the all-important oil-pressure sensitive VTEC solenoid. Passing the Baton here...but there are seriously a billion+ pages with this topic.

there's even a cartoon video showing how vtec works in action... im not going to look for the thread but its here some were...

it's pretty cool so you should look for it...
