A friend of mine is selling a power fc for cheap but he had a B16 so i was wondering if they are engine specfic or can they be changed to run a d16? Also has anybody had any experience with these? Would it be better to run a chipped ecu or ithe power fc? Thank you

No problems running a D16. If you are on OBD1, you will need a conversion harness from OBD1 to OBD2a. With tuning, you are set to go. As the Power FC has knock sensor readings as well, you can get a B Series knock sensor, mount it on the D block and hook it up to the harness.
I personally find it alot better than a chipped ECU especially with is powerful idle capabilities. If you've got the budget and can get it for cheaps, definitely theway to go.

Good reply. Or u might want to look for buildhatch as he is also running power fc too.

powerfc is by far, IMO, the best choice considering cost, features and adjustability.
ill contact you and we can talk.

Because Power FC was build for the EKs. Sockets are for the OBD 1 and OBD 2 are different.

you just get a harness from apexi or one of the jumper harness makers that converts the obdIIa box plugs down to the obdI plugs your cabin harness has, if the car has an obdI cabin harness of course. im assuming since it's a z6 you have obdI ECU plugs in the car.

so with the knock sensor does that need to be installed to tune properly ?
like does the ecu rely on input from that to work properly ?

well, a knock sensor is a great tuning tool, esp. when used in conjunction with the FC or atleast headphones, but, the FC does not alter anything based on the knock sensor, so if you don't hook a knock sensor up it simply will not display a knock value, that's all. It will not pull timing or anything based on knock sensor values.

The knock sensor readings can be deactivated from one of the menus. I would get a knock sensor down onto the block though. Cheap insurance.
But from what I hear, FC and the Honda knock sensors are a little too sensitive.

they are not all the same for sure; some use subpar pins, wires or assembly.
the ones i know for sure are good for the up harness are obviously the apexi one, which is VERY robust, with it's silicone block keeping all the wires/ pins in place, boomslang fabrication (made agent jam's harness) and i've heard decent things about rywire.

so which harness do i need ? obd1-obd2a ? or obd1-obd2b ?
coz according to the apexi website,
part number 414-h001 is for civic ex and integra gsr ej8 and dc2
for the d16y8 and the b18c1 96-98 MT.
the power fc only works with that model.
so if i bought a jdm power fc for ek9/dc2r ? which harness would i need ? ? ?

OBD1 to OBD2A should be what you are looking at. Power FC uses OBD2A. Yours just comes with base maps for ek9/dc2r.
This is what I got. Good stuff!

apexi just says that to show that it'll work with U.S. spec cars; in actuality, if you fire up the FC, on the commander it'll say b16b or b18c on the initial screen. There is no usdm FC, they are all from the same place, japan.
kookk is right, the fc is obd2a. this isn't as confusing as you are making it hehe....

most likely it'll be ok as long as you drive softly. What is the engine setup?

yes, that will run a-ok with the base map on the fc. just don't drive aggressively at all on the way to the dyno, but yeah, it should start up and run just fine.
