I put money into my 401k, but I don't know anything about it.

I wouldn't invest in stocks until you have a good grasp on costs and returns. Try Investopedia or Morningstar for the basics. The Motley Fool is a good source also.

A good place for your money now, until you're ready to tackle Wall Street, is Cd's. I think I've seen them just over 6% lately.

Don't be greedy and keep diversified

screw CDs.. i have a savings account that gets as high of rates as 6-9 month CDs.. and i don't have to have a minimum balance, or dedicate the money for a certain period of time

I'd start with a few books, namely Jim Kramers Mad Money. Just to get an idea af what his books about he writes on www.thestreet.com, has a syndicated radio show, and a show on MSNBC (9 PM EST). Really puts things in easy to understand terms. Best bet before sinking money into the market is to max out what you can put into tax friendly retirement funds first, like a 401K if your company offers it, an IRA otherwise. Also if you don't have enough to really be in the market (like me) look at mutual funds to start with.

i have 50% going into a money market, and the other 50% distributed between various high-risk investments

Ha. Based on that age of d-series members poll, I'd say that most of us won't see any SS.:TD:
