I am not sure if this thread belongs in Engine Management or General Tech or Whatever (so if it gets moved, I won't complain).

With all the questions on "What kind of ECU do I have" popping up lately, I thought it would be a good idea to post the info in a single page instead of having this info off-site (where said site may disappear).

A Honda ECU will always be read like so:

37820-P**-*0*, where -

37820 Identifies the part as a Honda ECU;
P** Identifies the Part Match of the Engine Components; and
*0* Identifies the Revision. This also identifies if the ECU is for an Automatic or Manual transmission car without opening the actual case - and if the ECU was manufactured for a car in a specific country.

Also, manual ECUs will usually have a middle digit of 0, usually going no higher than 3 or 4; Automatic ECUs will usually have a middle digit of 5 and above, but there are exceptions.

For example: My ECU is 37820-P08-J50.

So, according to the list, my ECU is for a Japanese Civic running a JDM D15B SOHC VTEC with an automatic transmission.

*Special Thanks to jdmcivic.com, rywire.com, and honda-tech.com for the info:

There is also a OBDII P28 used in '97 '98 del Sols with a D16Y8.

The last 3 revision characters of the part number may just be 3 numbers and not obviously indicative of which country/market the ECU was built for or what kind of transmission you have. I pointed this out in another thread.

Sorry to bring an old thread up..

BUT this should be stickied or added to the ECU tech discussion, i searched for 3 hours to find this, and i know we get lots of ecu identification questions...

So, if possible, please sticky it!

Actually, the revision info isn't in that thread.. I read through it a few times while searching for this thread in particular.

Should have been a bit more specific, sorry about that.
