I have the D16a6/y8 mini me set up.The guy i bought it from gave me a

timing belt and said its the y8 belt but i tried to put it on and it does not

come close to going over the cam gear.I got it on finally, and the timing was

off, took it off again reinatalled still off.Did this 5 times and these belt is

extremley hard to get on ,and even whistles its so tight.Anybody have any

tricks or might i have the wrong belt ? Is there any way to check what my

belt is for ?

I believe you should always use the belt that goes with the head. In your case you might try an a6 belt.

dont listen to this guy... did you try an a6 belt?..and i doubt the y8 tensioner would even fit... different design compared to the a6

also, did you try putting the belt over the camgear, THEN putting the spring on the tensioner?

BTW... yes the spring serves a purpose.

this is probably the dumbest thing ive heard in my life.... this is how people over/under tighten their timing belts..... i personally would NEVER do this... this is why the spring is there...

you install belt, rotate crank counter clockwise 3 teeth, tighten tensioner. then rotate 1 whole rotation of the camgear and see if its still lined up properly.

ok ... frist, have you ever done a mini me y8 head with an a6 block? an a6 belt is too big even with the a6 tensioner adjusted all the way. it's just too loose.the a6 belt can jump teeth and bend the valves. the y8 belt is too tight. and if left with the a6 tensioner the belt can snap after prolong use. "it's a ghetto fix, but it works!" the a6 tensioner is 2 1/4 in. in diameter and the y8 and the z6 tensioners are 2 in. a 1/4 in. makes a big difference on belt tension.http://http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r231/crx-y8/pics09o5.jpghttp://http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r231/crx-y8/pics0o5.jpghttp://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r231/crx-y8/pics097.jpg

first of all, you need a timing light and timing belt cover with top dead center mark. with the cam gear set at zero, put cam gear to stock location on head and put crank pulley on the single line. tighten tensioner, turn crank manually clockwise to make sure the valves don't ht the pistons. turn on car, let it warm up, put the timing light on the crank pulley and put distributor center. now, there are 4 lines on the crank pulley, 3 lines together and the 4th being top dead center, zero degrees. the other 3 lines being 18 degrees the 1st line, 16 degrees the 2nd line and the 3rd line being 14 degrees. now with adjustable cam gear, adjust positive or negative in increments of 2 till you hit 14 degrees on crank pulley with timing light. after every adjustment always double check piston to valve clearance by spinning crank manually. to get motor to run in optimal condition it be best to convert to OBD1 and use CROME or UBERDATA with y8 base map. when using CROME or UBERDATA you must set timing to 12 degrees.

the bottom pulley came off of a 1989 honda crx si with original timing belt and original motor never taken apart. d16 a6
