how loud is an open downpipe?

thinking about doing it on mine, but i don't wanna take off the exhaust then find out its unbarable.

it gets annoying sitting at a stop light. but in full boost it sounds mean as fuck. its not terribly loud. my exhaust was louder than my buddies open dp when i put my test pipe in

I'm running an open downpipe and wastegate dump. I drive 2-3 each way from school to home and it can get annoying. But in the end i love how it sounds under boost! :twisted:

It's loud enough that I felt ashamed of myself driving my brother's car through my neighborhood. When it started up people at the end of the block turned to see what just blew up.

The whistle of the turbo was nice though.

A turbo open downpipe sounds alot different than an open header on an na car. I've run both and the sound from an open downpipe is just sexy.

i would unbolt my midpipe if i had one lol, exhaust is one piece, only connection is at the downpipe with a slip fit.

I think I'm one of the only people around here running an exhaust on my turbo car :lol:. It is a little loud when they fire them up and sitting at idle, but like metioned above, it does sound good under boost and hearing the turbo whistle. I like the way mine sounds through my 3" exhaust and apex muffler personally :).

lol i used to cut my car off and coast all the way to my driveway when it was night time, caz it was very possible to wake up my buddys kids...then u feel like an ass

Exactly. My turbo got rid of any rattling sound in my exhaust

I've got both, and you can hear the wastegate open, it doesnt get much louder. It just kindof changes the tone

That's because the turbo's turbine smoothes out the exhaust pulses. It's the pulses through the system that make exhaust loud.

Think about the difference in sound between a compressor air hose (constant stream), and a potato cannon (1 large pulse) - same basic idea.

if i welded a high flow cat into the downpipe and than ran it open after that would it decrease the noise much?

i think im gonna go ahead and take off the exhaust tomorrow.

i'm going to by a section of pipe with a bend in it, cut off part of the bend so its flush or close to it with horizontal part of the downpipe so the exhaust gases exit downwards towards the road.

im hoping it will reduce some of the in car noise and exhaust that may enter the car.

Well I took my car for a spin in my neighborhood at about 2 in the morning. Yeah the neighbors were not happy to say the least. I got excited and I wanted to drive it, why can't they understand that.
I had to drive it with an open downpipe for about a week and it drove me nuts.

my friend has a gsr hatch that had i/h/e test pipe. the muffler has like a 5" tip. it was loud as fack until he put in a high flow cat, now its just loud.

if you ran it to like the side of the car it wouldnt be nearly as bad.

I drove open header for a WHILE(month lol) and the bitch SCREAMS like ear bleading loud lol... losdt SO much TQ and lowend and gained mabby a TAD over 6500rpm lol.

with the way you have it turned down, it will echo of the road surface more, in car noise might be a bother, but you can always route it out to the pass side, so at least it wont be as loud to the driver :)

just got done removing my exhaust and putting on the little turn down tip for the downpipe. its not as loud as i thought it would be. acceleration is pretty loud especially under WOT, but cruising isn't bad at all.

I have a testpipe for my N/A civic...

Pacesetter 4-2-1, 2 1/4 all the way back...

my high flo cat, and almost straight-thru designed Magnaflow muff are loud enough... if you put in the testpipe you gotta granny it or everyone within a mile knows im there...

the buzz from hell comes out too =)


I think im gonna get a twin loop muff to bolt in inplace of the cat... I think it will give a better sound =D

But yeah, when I do get my turbo in, I will be running open DP for a while... I want the sound fo sho!

i have open dp right now... hoenstly my car with the stock 4-2-1 header was 20x as loud... atleast open dp doesnt shake my car at 2500 and hurt my ears:TU:
