I have heard stories about the y7/y8 blocks having problems with spun rod bearings under boost. I wanted to know if there was any fact to this or if they are just as likely as any other motor to spin a bearing. I want to boost my y8 but I dont want to run the risk of ruining the motor.

Y7/Y8/Y5's are more likely to spin bearings than previous generations. There is an issue with the oil pump, probably something thats been archived

it is correct that the obd2 oilpump does not flow as much as a z6 oil pump.
i reccomend doing the mods found at energy dynamics. porting and shimming the y8 oilpump will bring up the oilpressure and flowrate of the pump. there are also mods to borring out the bearring oil holes. heres a link to help you with the mod.

these mods have been done to my obd2 block and it hasnt had one issue with spun bearings.

has nothing to do with boost though

Well...depends on how you look at it. You have to run additional oil lines to the turbo, which will in essence cause more of a strain to your oiling system. Along with this, you will the heat from the turbo will heat your oil up too, causing additional strain to your oiling system.

Mind you, a turbo's oil usage is not extreme, however it is an impact. By adding this to an already insufficient oiling system, one is asking for trouble.

good link to endyn

anyone actually know what the process is to open up the oil holes on the main bearings? drill? dremel with cutting bit? i'd imagine sharp edges would be bad... so should they be radiused on the crank side?

any suggestions for a good alum based epoxy that larry refers to when filling the oil pump allen plug hole?

Run an oil pressure Gauge, keep tabs on it when boosting, i have a freind that has been boosted since 2000 on a y8 without any problems at all....he always checks his oil, changes it and keeps an eye out on it...Run 10w30 anyways..

hes been on the same motor the whole time? thats impressive, i checked out the oil pump mod on endyn and the $135 to send in a pump and have it maximized isnt bad at all, not for what it would costs to redo or replace the motor after a spun bearing anways.

Yes it is impressive lol.....but i guess taken care of ur engine, and not smashin on it all the time as well for a DD makes all the difference in the world too!! i do agree somewut with the y8 havin the shitty end when it comes to oil pumps...The Z6 block is more widlely used because of this.:mikej:

he is running a home made kit.....it shouldnt matter anyways....greddy's kit is half ass except for ur getting a brand new Turbo....id rather put my own Fuel managment together, Tune my ECU etc, There kits are nice if you want to deal with being smog legal for the rest of your life.......Chances are, when u feel the boost....ur gonna want more...anyways, i guess i am gettin a lil off topic...

well i would use crome for tuning so that part of a kit i would throw away. What kind of power has he been making on his?
