I've used valve lash 0.15mm intake and 0.20mm exhaust (when cold), slightly smaller than specified (0.17 and 0.22).
It will "work" with stock cam gear, and you can change it only with adjustable sprocket. Anyway I suggest you get that adjustable gear, with some good tuning you'll get decent gains.
Turning distributor only affects to ignition advance. And if you adjust your cam timing (with adjustable sprocket) you must re-adjust your ignition(dizzy) after that (turn to opposite direction).

best most cost efficient way and one that works well is to use the y8 or y7 cam gear when putting the a6 cam in a d15b2 or b7.
ANd for setting at tdc and all that jazz, mark where the tdc mark on the timing belt relating to where d15 cam gear was and set the cam timing and valve lash with y8 or y7 cam gear exactly the same according to the d15b7 or d15b2 specs.
INtake 0.007-0.009
Exhaust 0.009-0.011
Adjust them when the car has been off for more than 8 hours

also...some argue that going tighter with 0.007 on the intake and 0.008 on the exhaust. It would make sense that this tighter clearance results in more valve lift and is probably more dead on if you compensate for the worn rocker and cam contact points but ive heard it creates a few smaller issues like idle problems but ive never tried those specs, just 0.008''(intake) and 0.010(exh)'' and its worked well for me.
