Just DIY. I've done 3 heads now and it seems to work pretty well for the 30$ it cost me. Here's my DIY thread from when I did my H23 head.

While porting your own heads is a relatively easy task granted you have a good feel for a series of grinding bits and stones, creating a port job that will actually give you the potential for greater flow numbers and most importantly velocity numbers is much more difficult. The number one reason to send your heads to a qualified machine shop is the experience. Chances are that you have a shop in your area that has ported Honda heads in the past. If you call them they should ask for several things before taking your head. These things include compression ratio, cam card (lift, duration, separation), and build type (NA, FI, NOS). I am luck to have one of the best known Honda machine shops in the country within a stones throw, this being ENDYN. I cannot say that they are the best, but I can tell you that there are tons of very good facilities out there for you to choose from. Here is an article that was done by ENDYN on a D16 VTEC head.

That Endyn article is excellent.

I ported my Z6 head mostly related to that article (but I also have my own knowledge and experience about heads/porting). Maybe the biggest differences were I enlarged(widened) the ports 1mm per side, and my valve configuration (stock with intake stems undercut 0.5mm and swirl-polished).

This gave me very good results. Head flows slightly better than stock B16A head (according to my flow chart and B16A numbers found from net, JG iirc). This should easily support over 200hp. With significantly smaller ports and valves than B16A, the flow velocity should be good too. It works excellenty in practice, have damn good torque at 2...4k and strong top end power + sharp throttle response.

My flow chart (http://personal.inet.fi/surf/rushi/z6flow.jpg)

Sorry, I know I've posted this multiple times here, but its also related to this topic and I think it might be informative for some ppl, and I hope it encourages you to port your head by yourself and learn something from it. IMO most important areas in these heads valve guide bosses, valve bowls and short turn radiuses, as well as valves(stems) itself. In my head there's only the factory 3-angle valve seat, which I radiused very slightly.

Personally, I am partial to the DIY jobs. Though there are alot of porters that have tons of experience, they got that experience through trial and error. The DIY job I do may not be the best but I will learn from my mistakes and improve upon the next head I port. Each one from there on, is a continued learning process built upon the lessons of others.

Besides that, anyone can write a check, how many people are truley willing to do it themselves and learn, even if the cost is more than what paying someone else would have been. The people who are now the reputable head porters learned from trial and error and so shall I.
