what's the differences in strength?...I found an EK hatch I wanna boost/mini me (mini me gives it 9.9:1 with a y8 head and 9.6:1 with a z6)...i want around 220whp...is the y7 shortblock up to it?

the real difference i bealive is aftermarket support...i would just build that bottem end for realiblity, and keep the non-vtec head, just boost the crapola out of it. Run a good tune and get it dynoyed...this has been covered alot! search as well....Remeber that on ANY D-series Block, the weakeast link are the RODS!!! if you can get yourself a y8 head, that would also be a another option but will require more crap to go along with it...

It'll handle it fine. I make ~220whp and 171wtq on my stock y7 block with y8 head. Daily drive it and beat it to shit if I wanted to and it doesn't flinch.
Y7 and Y8 are pretty much the same... only the head is different...

if they are the same then why according the the compression calc. do I get 9.9:1 when you put a y8 head on it?

theyre the same. only differance is the y8 has a knock sensor. both will do fine for boost.

...and they have different pistons in them.
Y8 - P2P-000 pistons (compression height 29.50mm)
Y7 - P2E-000 pistons (cpmpression height 30.00mm)
Somewhere I think I recall reading that there is some slight difference in the block itself, but I can't remember. I could be wrong.

:slap: VTEC, ......
maybe vtecH is over rated
i'd run the y8 head with a cam get a little better mpg vtec is for economy soyour not on high cam all the time for a week end only car i'd run sohc non vtec with a fat cam but if it was a dd i'd run the y8 head with like a crower stg2 in it, personally i dont like the y bottom ends id rather just run a a6 or z6

a6 =steel main girdle. also cheap and are proven race quality blocks.

Same block, just port the oil pump whatever you do.

agreed. if you have an obd2 block, doing the edyn mods are a must to prevent a spun bearing.

bearings can be hogged out as well.

Haha, I want to get rid of my Y8 head because of the bastardization honda made of it, and I want to get rid of my Y8 block because of the oil pump.
Pain in the ass huh?
