I recently bought a used head and have run into something I can't figure out. The head was ported by Gude, run for awhile then sold after a spun rod bearing ended the motors life. Supposedly at 11.5k RPM, it was an all motor 13.3 car. The guy who bought it had new valves/guides/springs installed and a 3-angle valve job done, decided to go Vtec and sold it to me, it was never installed. The parts are obviously new, cam is coated in assembly lube and the head has def been hot tanked or cleaned in a similar matter.
So I get it home and notice none of the valves are quite closed. I removed the rocker assembly and cam and no change. I was able to tap some of them home with a wood block, others don't seem to want to move. Any thoughts as to what could cause this or what to do? I have pics, and pics of the Gude port job for anybody who is interested, as well as stock A6 cam vs. Gude Gorilla but my smugmug account is down right now so they will have to come later.
Thanks for any help

It's normal for some of the valves to be open when the cam is installed. But if you're saying that all 4 valves are open on every cylinder all at the same time, then that's fucked. Sounds like the wrong valves were installed. They seem to be too long and too wide. Could also may be that the spings are too short.

It almost looks like there could be something wrong with guides. Did it take alot of force to push the valves closed when the cam/rockers were out? I don't know to me it kind of sounds/looks like guides.

There's no cam or rocker assembly in the head right now, nothing to hold them in at all. I was thinking the same thing with the valves or springs being wrong. The head was refreshed by a shop that normally does sport bike motors. I'll have to get a hold of a spring compressor and take it apart further. I'm only using a steel ruler but the installed height on the exhaust valve is about 1 7/8, the valves not seated and there is a little play in the spring, side to side and it can be spun with a little resistance.

I'm not a Honda guru so bear with me. Could it be possible to mix up the int/exh guides? If so would that cause the valves to not be properly centered?

I agree with tranzex...the valves are bent. You didn't get the whole story about that motor failure. Obviously, the head assembler didn't bother seating the valves or he would have caught that.

So all 16 valves are bent? I've never seen or heard of a motor failure that slightly bent all the valves is the exact same way. I think there was a problem with the assembly. i'm not feeling like I got fucked yet, but I'm starting to feel like I got felt up.

To the credit of the guy who sold me the head, he is superfuckingpissed at the shop that did the "work". Was supposed to be 16 new OEM Honda valves. I'm leaving for Iraq next month but he gave me a ton of contact info and offered to have new valves installed at his cost when I return. He'd do it now but I just don't have the time to play with this right now.

Love that bottom valve siregcivic! Mr. Piston meet Mr. valve
I think I am going to list mine on E-bay as custom JDM v-tech canted performance valves.
That or auction them off one at a time as used valves from Schumachers F-1 winning race engine. A timeless souvenier
