Alright so i have a 1990 si hatch and long story short tried to get the car to pass emmissions but there was no hope as it loved to burn up the oil. My friend had a JDM D16a motor kicking around so i decieded to put the long block in.

D16a motor is hard to find information on but as far as i have been reading its equivalent to a d16z6. IT IS A JDM ENGINE SOHC VTEC OBD 1 and what i have done is used all my manifolds and sensors ect. and put together the engine with a supposedly d16z6 distributor. The distributor only fits one of the mounting holes but it still holds it tight on there and still capable of moving for ignition timing.

Now my problem is i got the motor in and everything set up. I soldered the distributor to my harness. (jumper harness) and checked spark and ignition timing wihich is all good. When i crank the engine it sounds like it wants to start at the begining and then it just cranks freely with no indication it wants to fire up.

ANY IDEAS???
done ignition timing, battery at 14.6 volts and 10.8 cranking, no resistance in my ground connections, getting fuel, cranked long enough to shoot a cel but none came up. Using stock modified harness for distributor and running stock ecu not planning on using the vtec.

Any ideas to get this puppy going would be great. The distributor was said to be working find when came off the 92-95 civic and its said that the z6 is the same as these motors, but then again the dis. didn;t line up perfectly. Please let me know if you think the distributor is a problem too or if its any way poissible to indicatwe its off a z6.

i don;t have these things just kicking around ... I just remebered i have a z6 engine laying around i could see if the dizzy fits that head. Otherwise i got the wrong dizzy.

Any ideas to troubleshoot its non starting.

90 model EF uses OBD0 dizzy and ecu, the Z6 dizzy is OBD1 and won't work. will your original distributor from the Si motor bolt to the head?? it sounds like maybe you have a SOHC ZC VTEC motor?? but i'm not sure.................. if thats the case you'll need to do OBD0 to OBD1 conversion and use the ecu from a 92-95 Z6 motor(P28 ecu) to make all this work correctly.

i tried the obd0 dizzy off my a6 but it was worse. I wired the obd1 distributor to my obd0 engine harness and bolted it up. I don;t think this should be a problem as its the same as what rywire sells as a dizzy jumper harness.

the motor is a d16A (no letters after it) It is similar to maybe a obd0-1 sohc zc, but actually came in a ej1 in japan making it obd1. Honda-tech has some information about this engine if you search, but there seems to be much confusion with this.

but an OBD1 dizzy won't work with OBD0 ecu, thats why they sell the ecu conversion harness so you can exchange the PM6 ecu for the P28 vtec ecu, i don't think you will get this to work right until you make the proper swaps in the electronics.

ok so if i get the a6 dizzy to bolt up things should be alright you think?

well yes if you can make it bolt up and you will probably have to move the plug wires around on the cap to get the firing order right, because the rotor probably won't be pointing to the correct location of the original location of #1. just check where the rotor is pointing once you get it bolted up and have the motor at top dead center on the #1 cylinder and wire #1 to the corresponding location on the cap. then just wire the rest in the proper order and you should be all set. i hope i'm not being to technical for you??

you should have an a6 dizzy if you have an Si.... try bolting that up.

the z6 dizzy bolts up easier, so i am thinking if i can;t get the a6 dizzy to bolt up properly is it possible to swap internals of the dizzy? Has anyone tried that yet?

that jobs a bitch, the sensors must be aligned properly and most of the time the screws break when you try to take them out. it would be easier to convert to OBD1, check ebay for a used conversion harness and a p28 ecu.

yeah u have a good point about that one of those screw has got to go. Well i am stretch for time so i need to get it running temporarily atleast so i might just jimmy the a6 dizzy and consider the conversion afterwards.

I will keep you guys updated. Also if i do deciede to swap internals i will snap some pics and do a walk through with it (possibly if i am in no rush).

well i jimmied up the a6 dizzy for now and its running fairly good. I think its misfiring and has a small vacuum leak, but other then that its going well.

i had the same problem , this dood at autozone gave a 1995 1.5 vtec distrub. and all the holes lined up
