View Full Version : Parts storage?

I picked up a complete Gude head package(head/manifold/TB/ecu) for $200.00 yesterday, couldn't pass it up, and would like to make sure it doesn't suffer any damage after sitting on the shelf for 6 months or so. It came with an uninstalled Gorilla cam (has a stock A6 cam in it) that already has some surface corrosion. It's wrapped in newspaper soaking in WD-40 right now in an attempt to salvage it. If it cleans up I plan to coat it in grease and wrap in wax paper. Anybody have any suggestions for the head? It's clean now, with a fresh valve job/new valves &springs. Parts will be stored in a mostly dry basement, it gets a little damp after heavy rain but there is a de-humidifier running all the time. I'm thinking of coating it in oil and throwing it in a plastic bag.. After seeing the rust on the gorilla cam I'm a little paranoid.

I'd do just like your thinking, Put it in a garbage bag and put some oil in there to keep it from rusting if your not planning on useing it for a while. Just make sure to clean the hell out of it with carb cleaner, or have it hot tanked before you use it.

I figured I'd be safe with what I had planned but the web can sometimes yield some interesting knowledge on seemingly simple problems.

I'd also put the bag inside another, thicker bag just in case and if you think it might get hit put it in a box.

put it in a vacume (sp) selaed bag, can't rust if there is no air!

1:air doesnt rust, water + air rusts.

2: aluminum doesn't rust. only thing he would have to worry about is the TB and valves.

just say no the WD40.....it evaporates off after collecting dust, leading to rust.

thers some stuff called "iron clad" that sprays on and takes the consistency of heavy grease/waxy film. it works great, i would not use a garbage bag because they are bio-degradable and will break down over time. go to the machine shop and ask for a head or engine bag. if you can find a place that has that paper that they wrap cams/cranks in from the factory it would be good also because it is treated with a rust inhibitor, but the iron clad works great for any bare steel/iron surface.
