View Full Version : Another one of my dumb projects

Long story short:
I wanted an oil pressure sender and couldn't find anything for the british standard pipe tapered thread (stock sensor location) that I liked to remote mount the sender and keep the stocker. Ended up buying an oil filter relocation kit (Trans-Dapt) as it has 1/2" NPT on every connection. Ran into problems.

Short story long:
I made a bracket that holds the remote mounted FL1A filter horizontally, immediately above the transmission torque mount, which is pretty much exactly where the bottom of the OEM airbox used to be. It's not up by the hood, but just above the level of the stocker. I came up with some piping to try to see if it would seal and tee off the oil pressure sender. Problem was, the adapter on the block didn't have deep enough threads to seat the gasket and I didn't realize it. Thank goodness I though enough ahead to try and prime the system and see if I got pressure before running it.

I found out the hard way that a y8 oil pump is capable of dumping a quart and a half of fresh oil onto the garage floor in between 5-10 seconds when it's not developing pressure :TD:

Then I started looking everywhere I could online about hose and wondered about the integrity of what the kit came with. It has 30" hose rated for 300psi, but I'm worried about the "push-on" connectors it has. No clamps, but the hose does turn on the supposedly leakproof, non-swivel fittings.

So basically, I'm looking at:
-another block adapter, don't know what can accept the darn long nipple on the block
-probably new line but I don't know what size it should be. I read about people using -8 AN or -10 AN on Earl's fittings. I would lean towards the -10 AN just to be safe, probably stainless braid to avoid swell but that chafes anything touching it. Also, regular hydraulic hose is a viable option but then again, I don't work in that field and have NO idea what is available. Any hose should reach easily at 30" of length.
-Whether or not this is even safely feasable. After all, 4.3L Chevy Blazers and select 5.4L F-150s come with a remote mount from the factory, but I can't remember what kind of line they use.

Summing it up:
I would like to either finish or scrap this project soon because this Fram I put on there in the meantime SUCKS IN EVERY WAY POSSIBLE. Actually VTEC has become one of those things that doesn't work anymore because the darn thing doesn't have a BYPASS like it should.

That, and Trans-Dapt positively dropped the 8-ball when they were doing their "application cross-reference." Consider them negative-repped.

(BTW I found a post by transzex after I got into this where he listed everything needed to put the oil pressure sender on the firewall for about $50, including matching BSPT fittings going either way from pegasus somethingorother.website, I hate murphy's law. It would be nice to have the filter front and center there tho, instead of tucked above my 4-1 collector)

Forgot to add...
-was considering Perma-Cool universal block adapter 195, as it has a spacer plate to adapt gasket surfaces, but its I/O ports are 3/8" instead of the usual 1/2", making the choice of -10 AN over -8 AN line kinda pointless.
-I had also set up a tee with a plug on one side and the oil pressure sender on the other so I could tap off a turbo oil feed on the clean oil line right after the filter. I figured that would be nice and easy (only about a foot and a half from the turbo), and I wouldn't have to run a line all the way from a Tuner Toys fitting on the block.

I figured this would fall into the netheroblivion of d-series.

This was gonna be a mock-up, who knows maybe i'll paint the piping and keep it as is with good hose. Anyone know if -8AN can flow good enough?

I'm definitely hunting down a hydraulics shop this weekend, wish me luck.

I knew I would singlehandedly turn from "how do it do this" into "this is how you do this" lol

FYI for the BSPT-NPT fitting, I highly recommend the MCMASTER.com 316SS Adaptor. They cost 5$ and are very nice quality 316 stainless steel.

The push lock tubes aren't necessarily bad and 300psi capacity is plenty for your engine.
I personnally use earls and aeroquip hose stainless or kevlar braided hose, but it is very expensive...

Check out http://www.anplumbing.com/shop/
They have a great selection of aeroquip fittings and hoses.
The quality of the hoses is significantly better than what you'll find at autozone/napa...

Update! Sorry no pics.

Everything installed and working today, for the most part. I used Perma-cool universal adapter (worked great), -8 AN line with earl's fittings (no leaks first time), and --this took some work to seal-- the same black pipe in the picture, only less of it.

I pressure tested the pipe+filter+hoses (blocked off) by plumbing into the air compressor, regulated at 100psi and dipping it in water. First time there was a nasty leak at the filter mount, but disassembling, cleaning, and reassembling fixed that good as new.

Got one thing I wanted, the car takes nearly 5 qt of oil now.

Now I gotta figure out whats up with my oil pressure gauge, every once in a while it'll drop to below zero (no power) and come back in a few seconds. Weird.

As for oil pressure (as Stewart Warner reads it), cold is at about 80psi at high idle, warm is about 15psi idle, 40psi at 2000rpm, 60psi by 2800rpm, about 70 by 4000 and holds there. VTEC actually engages, that tells me that massive FL1A flows better even with 6' of hose than the tiny cheapo Frams do on the block!

Fixed the gremlin (loose power wire), still no leaks, and got it HOT today to see where the oil pressure levels off at:
Idle: 10psi
2000rpm: 35psi
2800rpm (60mph or so): 50psi
It peaks at 70psi somewhere above there and VTEC engagement didn't even move the needle...
