Hi all, I have a '90 DX hatch.

It has that terrible ricey buzz at certain rpms...it'll be quiet but then at certain rpms it hits the right resonance and it's really fucking loud. Then quiet, then loud again, etc.

Problem is, my exhaust system appears to be bone stock, with the exception that someone seems to have put a straight pipe where the cat goes.
Other than that, it's all dinky little crush bent tubing with a resonator and stock muffler.

What's causing this? I thought the cat had basically no effect on sound.
And how can I fix it...this is just my daily driver and I'm totally broke right now since I just bought the car so I'm looking for a solution for around $50 that will make it quiet.
I'm sick of looking/sounding like a ricer.

Would a different muffler work?

cat GREATLY effects the sound, why I prefer to run one or a glasspack in cat location.

Oh, very interesting. So if I could get a glasspack welded in where the cat should be, it should be nice and stock quiet...

Thanks.

mine sounds fine and im running no cat, 2.5 in piping and a resonator through an n1 can... all that sounds bad is the exhaust leak i have from a blown out donut gasket...

i am running no cat with a stock muffler. it not that loud compare to having no pipe after the cat.
