View Full Version : rich after cam install

setup:
y7 bottom, y8 head
crower stage 2 NA
oem y8 cam pulley
oem y7 ecu
field vafc(vtec disabled for now)
plx wideband
b&m fuel regulator @ 40psi vac line removed
Nothing was changed except for the cam and entire assembly above the cam(rocker arms, lost motions......etc). The entire assembly is oem before and after(will explain why later). I leaned it out a little bit at idle, the rest of the fuel curve was left untouched. Timing is retarded slightly for now. 94octane gas. cam timing is stock(oem pulley). The af reading is normal at part throttle (~15), but at wot it's running rich especially at higher rpm(11.xx @ 5k rpm), but when it hit 6k rpm it leans out a little bit(12.xx). What am i doing wrong?
Also, my engine cant go into vtec for some reason. This has been a problem even before the cam swap. I've tried 2 vtec solenoids(they click). I'm sure the wiring is fine(there's only 1 wire, which is wired to the vafc). There's no KS to wire up since i'm running y7 ecu with vafc. I changed the entire assembly above the cam to make sure i'm not missing any vtec pins. There's no oil jet on the y7 block when i did the head swap, so i'm good there. I dont think i was suppose to remove the jet in the head, correct? There's a dent in the oil pan, but my oil pressure still reads good. The oil pressure gauge is hooked up to the oem oil press switch location above the oil filter. It reads up in the 70s or 80s(dont remember exact number) at wot and high rpm. What could be wrong?

Looks like it just needs to tuned for WOT...

dent in pan can cause you to not go into vtec.. also you CANNOT RUN A STAGE 2 CAM WITHOUT TUNING FOR IT.......

The reason it's running rich is because you don't have vtec. You pretty much covered everything I would'v checked... I would also wire a toggle w/ +12v and run it to the solenoid. See if that works. Then, if not, I'm willing to bet that there really are some vtec dowells missing/in the wrong places.

hows that?

well i think his wouldnt because he said his oil pressure is fine.. i forget the dudes name but he had a HUGE dent in hsi pan and vtec wouldnt engage until like 6500 or somethign when he swapped.. he had a 4dr with a zc swap.. shuit whats his name!

but it's a y7 ecu, non vtec fuel map. I was at the track last year, we didnt have much time, so i cut off the vtec sol wire running to the vafc, and some random +12 wire, have both of those sitting on my lap, then when i hit about 5k rpm, i touched the 2 wires together. and that still didnt work, pretty sure it's not a wiring problem.

yes it needs to be tuned no doubt, but i wouldve think with a stock map, it should run too lean with a bigger cam instead of too rich. It might run rich at idle or light throttle because of the low vac, but at wot in closed loop it should run lean.

would retarded ignition timing cause the fuel to not burn completely?
could the valve leash make this much of a difference?(i havent adjusted them yet, but when i checked it real quick, they were just very slightly more than crower's spec)
So I am suppose to keep the oil jet on the head right?

Keep the jet in the head.
Any CEL's?
Lash doesn't affect it.
The reason I said you're running rich because vtec isn't working is because the smaller lobes are made to be efficient at lower rpm. As soon as you start moving past the rpm in which they start becoming a bottleneck, and the fuelmap is progressing as normal, you've got a rich situation. I'm willing to lay money down that says the y7's cam has higher peak lift on it's intake lobes than the small lobes on a stock sohc vtec cam.
You simply do not have enough airflow to compensate for the already rich state of tuning that honda generously provided us with.

dont know the y7 cam spec, still searching
here is the crower's spec for the non vtec lobes:
lift .205
duration 295
@.05 204

btw i'm going from a stock y8 cam to the crower one. not y7 to crower. i did the head swap last year, i swapped the cams on saturday, and it's only after i swap the cam i have the rich problem. i was rich before the cam, but thats just the stock map, but it wasnt anywhere near as rich as i am now.

did you see that???

how am i suppose to tune it? lean it out even more? maybe i should fix the rich before it's tuned. no point tuning an engine that obviously has a problem.

well i had a wideband.. i installed my cam.. it was automatically rich as soon as i started it up... BECAUSE stock maps arent good for anything but stock cars...
putting a cam in wont make it lean automatically. it will vary in different parts of the car
especially with you running higher compression due to the mini me
so getting it tuned will take care of it
