Looking for some reassurance...My engine is pinging like crazy when I take off with light throttle all the way through 3rd gear , possibly higher. Me and my brother think its the 89 octane gas Im trying to run, keeping in mind that I have a stock block zc vtec , y8 head gasket and the head has been milled several times just enough to clean up the surface. I dont know what the compression of it is but I would guess maybe 9.5/1 to 10/1. Im going to try to empty the half tank of 89 and fill it with 93 octane this week...anybody have any ideas ,comments or recommendations....Im just kinda worried because its pinging worse than ever. My mods are listed below . thanx in advance...gloryHog

Are you sure its pinging, and not rod knock?

with the head milled, makes me wonder if the cam timing isn't out of whack advanced.

not rod knock.....it sounds like a bunch of marbles or a ping sound ....dont really know how to explain it....but Ive heard rod knock and this is not it...

cam was indexed perfectly when installed, dyno tuned and everything has ran fine for almost a year.....Im leaning torwards bad gas or to low of octane...it is a jdm zc vtec , I wonder what the factory compression was on this engine?

how does it run on better gas?

Well for a long time I ran it strictly on 93 octane , but since the gas prices went crazy high I started running 89....which is not that much cheaper so I dunno...but the only thing I can remember doing recently is reseting the ecu while doing some maintenance work. I will fill it with 93 tommorow and see what happens...

I doubt it is the gas. I run alot more timing than anyone here and only use 87 octane.

Only three times has my car seen 93/94 octane since I've owned it.

has nothing to do with octane.... Have you changed anything recently? Other than the gas...if anything, I'd say you may have a bad tune or something... especially if your ecu is just 'chipped' and not actually tuned.

well it is tuned...but that does not meen that it is perfect... I suppose it could be running to much timing ... it runs great, just pings like a mofo down low...

timing belt jump? mine knocked like ur and i put higher gass in it and it would go away till i tried to take off quick and then it would knock/ping.....i took it in and my timing belt had jumped

id maybe check the timing.. stock compression is same as the z6 im pretty sure.. if its diff it would only be lik .1 or .2... not enough to do anything
im only running 87 in my build but stock hg and no milling

I checked the timing tonight and it was set at 19 degrees BTDC ...so that could have been the issue...this is just the base timing but I will see if it helps in the morning. I might go to the dyno pretty soon and see if I can retune and get the AFR's down low a little leaner, because it seems to be way rich from idle up to redline, and I dont see any reason for anything below 14/1 in the cruising rpms. thanx for the feed back d-series

Thats not that extreme. My setup, using many of the same parts you have, but with 11.4:1 CR on 91 octane was able to be advanced into the 30+ degrees area with no detonation. The tuner was very impressed with how the motor would not detonate even with extreme settings. I do have a Y8 head, which helps with that. I think my PM6 pistons help as well, since their flat, no hot spots and such, anyway, the point is, 19 degrees is probably normal. I think my setup is a bit more then that in the ignition timing.

16 BTDC is stock base ignition timing but i doubt 3 degrees will make you detonate. However, since running the car for a year have you run sum cleaner, i.e. seafoam or decarb service, thru it? you might have sum carbon build up in the cylinder causing hot spots and a slight increase in compression, and since you say its runnin rich, it can create deposits.

yeah I think it could def. have some carbon buildup ...being that my muffler has a 1/4" thick wall of it ...Im going to check it on the wideband hopefully this next week....but since I backed the timing down to 15 degrees base, it has not done it since...I still think the tune is way to rich down low thus causing way to much carbon buildup in the combustion chamber. thanx to everyone...have some rep...
