Just wondering because a friend has one, and well, I have to wonder did Honda make it a certain distance between gears for a reason or just for practicality?

ok, thats all :honda:

No! They are not bad. ALl the short throw does is makes the OEM gear change a bit faster.

I've had my b&m short shifter w/ aluminum stablizers for over a year and it causes no problems. I way people have problems with them is when they grind gears b/c they are not used to the difference in feel.

One word of advice from a problem I have had. Make sure you use a little bit of locktight when bolting up the shift linkage to the tranny. I didn't and the bolt started backing out. With the extra play in the linkage I thought my tranny was going to shit, but when I was bolting up my header around the same time I noticed the bolt, put some locktight on it and haven't had a problem since.

I also heard that a short shifter was bad for your tranny until I asked about it. I have a skunk2 short shifter and I have had no problems with it. Like gudecivic said the only problems that may happen is you grind gears from not being used to the shifting and also if you rest your hand on your shifter the added pressure can cause some damage. This is what I have heard so I am only trying to give you some insite.

short shifters are only bad IF you attempt to shift at the same speed as the stock shifter. You have to learn to slow your shifting down.

If not your gonna where out the shifter forks and synchros.

Then you'll be asking "Why does my tranny grind?"
