as my turbo project is nearing completion, rather, as soon as i finish paying it off so i can get it. (layaway custom kit at my shop... i'm so poor) how important is it that i get a turbo timer with it, because it's not coming with one as of right now.

it keeps oil from coking in the turbo. You dont need one just before you shut your car off let it idle for a couple minutes.

Hi mom, hi dad.
Hi sonn.
Why are you staying in the car? your coffee will get cold.
It's to stop oil from coking in my turbo mom.
Why would that ever happpen sonn?
it's because i don't use synthetic oil, specially designed for turbo engines dad.

Seriously though, iff you just keep your engine under 3000 rpm for the last mile or so, it won't be a problem.
And iff you use synthetic oil (best to buy oil designed for turbo cars) it won't be a problem at all.

ok, i know that joke was mildly at my expense, but that was really funny! anyway, i use synthetic anyway... mobile1 FTW! i just don't wanna mess anything up... it's my first turbo set up, and i'm stoked, and after all this time of working long hours and restricting my food and party intake to pay for this, i'll just snap if i fuck it up because i don't know what's going on

if you have a timer on your dash, people shouldn't have to wonder, they should know... shouldn't they?

where'd you get the a6 from?
try a y8....& stated that the turbo is almost complete,
I wouldn't think that its tired at all!!!!
its just the beginning...
(mostly when its helping the turbo....not the motor)

I had one of those ebay ones too works perfect. I no longer need it as my car alarm has a turbo timer in it :) It not only helps your turbo, it helps the engine too. Where do you think that hot oil came from? the motor? Noo the turbo heats it up more than the engine. Warm oil from engine ---> turbo, turbo heats it up even more----> back into engine----> hot oil into turbo, heats it up even more---> baking oil. You get the idea.

Everyone said just sit in your car for a few minutes...has never had to do it they are internet reading junkies. I took that advise and the following week, I ordered a timer off ebay ffffffffuck that. Sit in the car and wait HAHAHAH.

I'm going turbo very soon too and I never planned to get a turbo timer but I wonder if I install a oil cooler... will this stabilize the oil temp and also avoid wait time to have it cooled down before shut off?

Just throwing an idea.

more directly: Does an Oil cooler replace the need of a turbo timer or the cooling idle time at all?

a lot of aftermarket alarms (with remote start at least) have them. i have a viper 791xv. i also installed one of those into a buddy of mines srt4 and it works pretty good...i can also set it for 1-15minutes with my bitwriter. just a thought...killing 2 or 3 birds with one stone.

Are you saying that Profec b II is a turbo boost controller AND turbo timer or do you recommend it WITH a turbotimer?

maybe. but look at the cost of an oil cooler compared to a turbo timer. oil coolers are meant for auto-x and engines that run at high rpm's a lot (no 15 seconds or less at the strip isnt enough high rpm time to justify an oil cooler)

To answer your question, no it doesn't. An oil cooler does just as the name suggests, keeps the oil at a lower temp when ran hard for extensive amounts of time. It'll work fine with a turbo timer, but doesn't do the same thing or illiminate the "need" for a timer. I said "need" because the timer isnt needed, it's a convenience.

Using synthetic oil does not illimnate the "need" for a timer. You still need a cool down period with synthetic oil.

The obviouse, if you don't mind sitting in your car for a few seconds or a few minutes after driving then a timer is not needed. You can baby the car, keep the RPMs down and out of boost, for the last minute or so and sit for just a few seconds when parked and do the same thing as a timer.

A turbo timers general purpose is to allow your turbo to cool off properly when you stop the car by feeding it a steady stream of fresh oil under regular idle load pressure; which should help prevent coking of the bearings.

.

if you dont drive hard for the last mile you dont need to sit in the car for a few seconds or minutes.

i never heard of factory turbo cars saying sit in your car for a few minutes after you drive it.

the only reason i can see for myself for a turbo timer is your late for something, bust ass getting there and have no time to wait. other wise just drive nice for a mile.

what are you doing most of the time before you shut your car off?? cruising! which creates the same amount of heat as idling.

unless you are raping the shit out of your motor, then immediately shutting it off instead of just driving, you dont need a turbo timer. who boosts into their driveway? into parking lots? if you are driving normal, there is no need. why do you think factory cars dont come with them? because they arent boosted until shutoff.

just dont be boosting and then immediately shutting the car off and you wont have any problems.
