REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

See Figures 1, 2 and 3

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.

3. Drain the engine oil.

4. Bring the No. 1 cylinder to TDC. The mark on the crankshaft pulley should align with the index mark on the timing cover.

5. Remove the necessary accessory drive belts and the crankshaft pulley.

6. Remove the valve cover and the timing belt covers.

7. Remove the following components:

a. Timing belt tensioner.

b. Timing belt.

c. Timing belt drive pulley.

8. Remove the oil pan and oil screen.

9. Remove the oil pump mount bolts and the oil pump assembly.

To install

10. Apply a light coat of oil to the seal lip.

11. Install the two dowel pins and new O-ring on the cylinder block.

12. Make sure the mating surfaces are clean and dry and apply liguid gasket to the cylinder block mating surfaces of the oil pump. Do NOT apply liguid gasket to the O-ring grooves.

If more than five minutes elapse after applying liquid gasket without installing the pump, peel off the liquid gasket and reapply a new coating, then bolt together within the five minute time frame.

13. Install and bolt on the pump within five minutes of applying liquid gasket. Tighten the bolts to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm). Install the oil screen, oil pan and remaining components. After assembly, wait 30 minutes before filling the engine with oil.

14. Install the timing belt. Be sure to properly tension the timing belt after installation. Tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt to specification.

OIL PUMP OVERHAUL

See Figures 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8

These procedures are the same for all Civic series models. They are performed with the oil pump removed from the engine. A feeler gauge will be needed to take the following measurements.

1.Check the inner-to-outer rotor clearance on the rotor pump. Clearance for a new unit is 0.0008-0.0056 in. (0.02-0.14mm), the service limit is 0.008 in. (0.2mm).

2. Using a feeler gauge and a straight edge, check the body-to-rotor clearance on the pump rotor. Clearance for a new unit is is 0.0012-0.0032 in. (0.03-0.08mm), with 0.006 in. (0.15mm) as the service limit.

3. Using a feeler gauge, check the housing to outer rotor clearance. Clearance should be 0.0004-0.0072 in. (0.10-0.18mm) new, with a service limit of 0.008 in. (0.2mm).

4. Inspect the pump housing and both rotors for scoring or other damage. Decide whether the pump requires any repair or replacement of parts. (Inner and outer rotors on both upper and lower halves are installed with the punch marks aligned adjacent to one another.)

5. Replace the oil seal (special tools required, see picture) as standard practice. Gently tap in the new oil seal using a suitable driver or Honda tool part No. 07749-001000 and a 52×55mm attachment.

6. Using petroleum jelly, pack the pump cavity and reassemble it using applying a light coat of liquid gasket to the pump housing screws. Make sure that the pump turns freely in your hand when assembled.

Special tool is not required. Take oil seal to Home Depot and find a PVC connector that has the same diameter as the seal. Use that and a block of wood to tap it in evenly. Coat the outer perimeter of the seal with a moly based grease so it slides right in.

^ i never grease the outside seen too many seals get spit out that way. and also if you have deep sockets you can use a properly sized one to drive a seal.

That's interesting. None of mine spit out in 25 years, go figure.

You should probably mention that it's a good idea to prime the pump and leave some oil in it when you reinstall it. Seen alot of people around here fry their brand spanking new oil pumps within days cuz they did not prime it and left it dry when they reinstalled it. Just my .02 but good writeup none-the-less
