Valve Springs
Honda Civic/CRX/del Sol 1984-1995 Repair Guide

If the cylinder head is removed from the engine, refer to the valve removal and installation procedures in this section and remove the valve springs.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

See Figures 1 through 6

1. Refer to the rocker arm removal and installation procedures in this section and remove the rocker arm assembly.

2. Using an old set of rocker arm shafts, install them in place of the rocker arm assembly; this will prevent bending or scratching the original set of shafts.

3. Remove the spark plug(s) from the cylinder head.

4. Rotate the crankshaft to position the cylinder (being worked on) to the TDC of its compression stroke.

5. Using a Spark Plug Air Hold tool, install it into the spark plug hole and inject compressed air into the cylinder to hold the valves in place.

6. Using a valve spring compressor tool, compress the spring(s) and remove the valve keepers. Relax the spring compressor tool, then remove the valve retainer, the spring(s) and the valve seal; keep the parts in the exact order for reinstallation purposes.

If reusing the valve seals, it is recommended to replace the neck springs of the seal; the black spring is used on the exhaust valve seal and the white spring is used on the intake valve seal. The seals are not interchangeable between the intake and the exhaust valves.

7. Inspect the springs for fatigue, cracks and/or uniformity; if necessary, replace them.

8. To assemble, first lubricate the valves with clean engine oil and slide the valves up and down in the valve guides to make sure they move smoothly.

9. Install the valve seals using a valve guide seal installer or suitable to

10. Then install the seals and lubricate the parts with clean engine oil. Use the valve spring compressor tool to compress the springs and carefully install the valve keepers, retainers and springs.

CAUTION

When removing the valve spring compressor tool, remove it slowly and make sure the valve keepers are fully seated; otherwise, the springs may fly off.

11. After removing the valve spring compressor, tap the valve stems with a plastic mallet 2-3 times to make sure the valve keepers and valves are fully seated. Only tap each valve stem along its axis so you do not bend it.

12. Refer to the rocker arms/shafts and camshaft installation procedures in this section, then reassemble the rest of the cylinder head.

When installing the springs, be sure to position the closely wound coil ends or painted part toward the cylinder head.

13. To complete the installation, use new gaskets and install the cylinder head on the vehicle.

14. Refill the cooling system, connect the negative battery terminal, start the engine and check for normal running and leaks.

INSPECTION

1. Position the valve spring on a flat, clean surface next to a square.

2. Rotate the spring against the square to measure the distortion (out-of-roundness). If the spring height varies (between similar springs) by more than 1/16 in. (1.6mm), replace the spring.

Did you write this or copy it out of a manual?

the internt is only good for two things:
1. getting information and
2. porn.
(i.e. get information on porn.):)

A couple of tips...

Wear eye protection. The spring compressor can slip off and boing!!, you become "one-eyed Pete". :hammer:

Spread some sheets on the floor, around your engine, and over the other valves on your cylinder head so that when the keepers are dropped or fly off you can find them.

"2. Using an old set of rocker arm shafts, install them in place of the rocker arm assembly; this will prevent bending or scratching the original set of shafts. "

I don't think this applies. Just remove the lost motion assembly (if present), rocker arms, and cam.

"5. Using a Spark Plug Air Hold tool, install it into the spark plug hole and inject compressed air into the cylinder to hold the valves in place. "

I've never done this, but I think 100psi, right? Some recommend putting each cylinder at TDC in case your valve drops in, you might not lose it. Also make sure that the crank is secured because pressurising the cylinder will rotate the assembly. Then there's the rope trick that avoids all this.

"9. Install the valve seals using a valve guide seal installer or suitable to" (SIC).

I think you meant "or suitable tool". A deep 10mm socket is a very suitable tool for this.

"If reusing the valve seals, it is recommended..."

I would never re-use a seal once the engine has run it.

"11. After removing the valve spring compressor, tap the valve stems with a plastic mallet 2-3 times to make sure the valve keepers and valves are fully seated"

Cover the valve with a rag and hold it in place with your hand while you hammer it to avoid having the keepers, retainer, and spring launch into space if it lets loose.

"14. Refill the cooling system..."

Only necessary if you removed the head. Hmmm. This started out as an in-engine how-to.

awesome write-up. basically the same procedure if the head is off the car as well

eh, i must do it all wrong.

I just use a deep socket or spark plug socket and hold it over the spring and tap a hammer to it.

And I have never lost any keepers at all.

I don't know why I just posted this.

But the best safest way would be what is above.

Nice Write up!! er I mean Nice find!!!

The tool used I dont see anyway that would work I had to modify that style tool by bending it and grinding down the fingers to fit the spring and retainer!

looks good except if head is off car then there is no need to use compressed air or that type of spring compressor. Also no need to remove valve seals for springs but good idea since you are in there anyway. Good writeup!

Yeah i borrowed a spring compressor just like that from autozone on their lone-a-tool program, they dont know it yet, but now they have a custom spring compressor cuz i had to bend the "fingers" in and grind down the grabbers also, it definitely wasnt meant to bend because little stress cracks started getting bigger, and bigger. Other than that it worked good.
