Do D-series motors have a certain sound to them? does anyone here experience a noise around 3200rpm? I changed out the D16Y8 in my car originally for a D16Z6 because of this odd noise it made, almost sounded like rod knock, i changed the bearings same noise. The Y8 had 120K when i took it out and the Z6 in the car now has 71K and i think it makes the same noise or i might just be paranoid. I just want to know are there any D-series owners out there who experience a noise like this or any other noises from the motor?

perhaps you need a valve job bro, is it like a ticking or is coming from the exhaust

im not 100%... i want to try and video tape it but i need a camera really bad...

yep, I used to hear the same noise. Only does it in winter. Could be a handfull of things but start with a good valve adjustment. Does it still do it when the engine is at operating temp?

no noise for me. just the usual noisy valvetrain at idle

yeah, does it start at 3200 or become most noticable then? does the noise increase in frequency when you rev it up? Valve tap is noticable when the engine it cold, lessens as the engine warms up. It sounds like a constant ticking. Get a valve adjustment if this is your case.

What does it sound like?

"used to hear" being the key phrase...

well, what fixed it? A valve adjustment, change in seasons, an engine swap?

i havent been able to figure it out, but it seems to make the noise more pronounced when it is VERY hot outside, i mean like 85-90 degrees, at night when its cooler it doesnt do it... Maybe because of the no knock sensor my timing may be to advanced, if i go to retard the timing, which way do i turn the dizzy, clockwise or counterclockwise?

how long have you been hearing this noise? I assume the z6 is stock?

If the timing is too advanced, it'll ping. My engine pings at around 3200, but that's because it desperately needs to be tuned.

the motor is stock, the noise becomes more pronounced at 3200rpms but i beleive it makes it at an idle to... can this be valve lash being unadjusted i am hearing at this rpm?

o, and you have to try and hear it, its that quiet, like the vents have be off (not even on 1) and the stereo must be mute to even slightly hear it.

it could be either a valve tap or pinging, if not something else. I have to really try to hear my engine ping, but it becomes most pronounced at around 3200, as you said. My dad's car has a valve tap (d16y7 motor) and it's most noticable at idle.

What's your ignition timing set for?

I have a D15B6 and well basically I think I have a similar problem. Right at 3000rpms, I have a nice buzzy noise. If I go over, I no longer hear the noise, and under I don't hear it, but if I hold the throttle right at 3000rpms, I have a constant buzz.

Yea, I have a similar noise from my d16a6. It clears up right about 3000+rpms. It is most noticable from 2k-3k when it cuts out, but is noticable from idle.

I'll jump out this morning and make a video really quick I think I might have the same problem. The sound is audible at idle and when begining to move in first and can also be heard as you rev up it speeds up. If it needs a valve adjustment thats fine but hopefully its not the bottom half of the engine.

Alright here's a link to the video its 23 megs so I hope you have broadband. It's my B7 with 125 000 km not miles it's just got the SRI and a 2" exhaust with an OEM Honda muffler. Turno down your speakers at first because I think it's really loud tell me what you think might cause the noise.

I couldn't really hear it. But most of the time if it sounds like the top its the valve train. A relash may help out. Also examine the shims and make sure they aren't cracked or grooved. The humming sound kinda sounds like your fans are on.

I don't think the fan was I just got back from a good half hour drive and opened up the hood let it sit for about 10 minutes then went back and made the video. The intake tube makes a good amount of noise too which is the humming your hearing its not the fan and you can really here the noise I'm talking about from under 38 seconds and the times where I rev up a bit and when the revs drop.

The other people that mentioned that they have the same noise does it sound similar to my car?

dude I hear it it's your valves most car that don't have self adjusting valves nake this noise woth high miles and no matter how many times you adjust them they with still make this noise it is becasue of years of wear unless you want to change all you valves train components to new then it'll go away don't worry it's nothing

X2. I heard the noise on the video. It is definetly not a timing issue that makes a different kind of pinging noise.

Yeah that's good to here that its just the valvetrain making the noise. Would there be any way to help keep this from happening when I toss the Z6 head on it? I've been cleaning it slowly but the damn valves are really baked with crap and its tough to get the junk off. I just hope the Z6 head will make less valvetrain noise.

man, i dont know the noise that mine is making. It's pissing me off. It almost sounds like a rod bearing but it cant be, i checked them when i bought the motor, they look perfectly OK. When i am driving and the engine revs to about 3000rpm you will hear a noise, i don't know what it could be and i can't explain what it could be. im getting kind of sick and tired of honda's, i love them but it seems like i always have bad luck with them, it seems like the best Honda i've had was my Accord, i miss that car.

I once had this problem - checked everywhere.
It turned out that the newly installed stainless steel manifold makes the damn ticking noise. The oxygen sensor installed there became loose and resonated at a certain rpm. It got so bad (loose) that it rattled at every RPM.

ya and i also realized something, I have a short ram intake, and no knock sensor, and its very hot were i live during the day, like 85-90 degrees, and it makes the noise hella loud during the day, but at night its like 70-75 degrees and a little humid, and it doesnt make the noise...

I had the same sound commin from my 87 prelude..right around 3 grand, it sounds like someone tossed a ball bearin in the header and its bouncin around...I did some research and this guy had taken his exhaust manifold off, took a chops saw, made two vertical slices right in the middle of where the exhaust would flow out, and then he welded them back together...I thought it was rather retarded...and then I sold the bitch for a 91...
