What i have is an 86 civic with a d15a5. What i need to now is what d-series motor would be the best swap with a low budget.

Disregard the previous post, the D16A1 from the '86-'89 Acura Integra is the best and cheapest swap available to you. If you are sure you have an '84-'87 Civic, then this motor would be a direct bolt-in if you have the necessary donor parts from the Integra. Be sure to check out RedPepperRacing.com (http://www.redpepperracing.com) for more info about your car and this swap.

The '86-'87 D16A1 (brown valve cover) uses a vacuum advance distributor and puts out around 113hp.
The '88-'89 D16A1 (black valve cover) uses an electronic advance distributor and puts out around 115hp. The pistons of the blacktop also have a slightly higher dome than those of the browntop.
Both are 1.6L's with a DOHC 16valve head.

ALso pick up the july edition of honda tuning, they have that swap, parts, and the car for 2500. Yes it is the best motor for its cheap price.

id still go with a dohc zc swap over it man i mean ya its a little more expensive but imo do it right the first time. the d16a1's youll find most of them in a junkyard that have been sitting for years witht he hoods poped getting rained on snow and what ever else happens in the junkyard.

30k dohc zc

or

100+k d16a1

That's the owner of RedPepperRacing in HondaTuning, it's actually a D16A6 swap... you don't wanna try that; It requires a lot of fabricating and custom mounts. And still makes less power NA than a D16A1.

Don't waist your money on finding a ZC, the A1 is basically the same. But there is a guy on ebay selling his 1st gen ZC for about $500.

A junkyard engine can still be a good engine. But what's nice, is finding someon that crashed their '86-'89 Integra and is selling the entire car for like $200, then you get the engine and everything else you need.
