View Full Version : b-series TB on my d-series?

I've heard that a b-series throttle body will fit on a d-series motor - 60mm bore instead of 56mm.
Will it fit on a DOHC ZC intake manifold? How about on a d16a6 manifold? Do you have to change the sensors on the b-series TB to make it work? Do you have to use a 89-91 B16 TB?
I'm asking because I have a DOHC ZC and I'm going to increase compression with a thinner head gasket and slight mill, maybe getting cams too, so a larger throttle body may really help air flow. :)

I'm not at all trying to steal your thread...i actually posted this in the CRX honda-tech forum less than 10 minutes ago. I know i've heard that B series throttle bodies fit on D mainfolds but i recently purchased a 1st gen B16 tb and it looks a lot different than my D16 TB, here's the post...
"I bought a 1G B16A TB and i want to mate it to my Y8 manifold...the bolts all match up but other than that all the vaccum channels and such are totally different. There is also no spot for a MAP sensor on the B16 TB.
I know D series guys have used B series TB's on their manifolds i just need to know how. The B16 TB is bare so can i just swap the TPS sensor from a D16 TB?
How about the HICV (high idle control valve on bottom of my D16 TB), it uses coolant flow to allow more air when cold and less air when hot. The B16 TB doesn't have this on it but just 2 coolant lines that pass through the bottom of the TB.
Does this sound right? Will it work correctly? What do i need to do to make it work right?
Thanks in advance i couldn't find much searching but will keep trying,
Vince"
Hopefully someone can help us out. :D

1st gen b16 is 58mm tb. I didn't think that it would even bolt up to a d-series IM. I do know that 94+ 60mm TBs will bolt up to a d-series IM. I didn't have any problems bolting a gsr tb up to a y8 IM.

all sensors bolted up in the same place and vaccum holes lined up on your GSR TB?

looks nearly identical to the y8 5-spd tb. only connections to it are the coolant lines on the bottom, map sensor and tps sensor.

i'll try to get a pic of it up tonight...

It will not bolt up directly, but if you use a mill, etc. and "drag" the location of the mounting holes you can get it to bolt up. You will need to fill in the aforementioned coolant hole with aluminum epoxy and then polish it back to a smooth surface.
Last, and most notably, you will need to take your IM and bore it out as the restiction at the face where the TB bolts on is on 56mm - you have to bore it out to at least 60mm to get the benefit of the B16 TB.
I've seen it done already and I am in the process of doing it myself...

Are you replying to my post about the 1st gen TB?
I actually bought the Y8 mani and B16A TB together bored to the same inner diameter. The bolts match up perfectly but there is no place for MAP sensor and some of the vaccum channels on the gasket surface are different. Also there is no high idle control valve just a coolant in and out...
Does this sound right?

I can get a b18a1 60mm throttle body for cheap and i was wondering the same thing, it will fit the d16a6 IM?
Also, the TB i can get is from an integra w/ automatic trans, I was told that the only difference is the auto TB has a kickdown cable, so can it still be used on my CRX w/ 5 speed? Just not hook up the kickdown?

Damn, should have read a little closer - the part after D16A...I was referring the D16A1 manifold in my response.
AFAIK, your assesment of it bolting up to the Y8 IM is correct. You will have to use a remote mounted MAP Sensor - mount it on the firewall and run a hose over to the plenum. This is from memory, but I believe this is how a friend of mine sold the MAP problem...I would have to scratch my head a little bit more to firgure out the idle control...

Yeah i searched and found that people just tap into a vaccum line and remotely mount it...how about the high idle control valve or whatever. I think the TB i have (B16A) was meant to have the HICV mounted on the intake manifold. Do i really need this item? Doesn't seam like it is necessary maybe someone could enlighten me.
Either that or i need to buy or trade for a newer B16/B18 TB...
Thanks,
Vince

hey anyone got a pic of a Z6/Y8 tb from the gasket side? I'll post up a pic of this 1st gen B16 TB but i'll need something to reference it too.
THanks!!!!

i've got an aftermarket tb i picked up used it was intended for a gsr motor but put it on my d15. the throttle linkage hooked up a little diffrent b/c on a b-series motor the throttle cable pulls from the top of the tb, on a d-series the throttle is pulled from the bottom. mine worked fine

i just finished the y8 i.m./b18c5 tb swap on my sohc zc, everything went well except for my eacv and iat sensor, i need a y8 eacv and need to tap a hole for the iat, right now, neither of the two are hooked up but the car runs fine except that it idles at like 2000 rpm,ill fix it soon though :D
