and what advance/ retard did people use

2-3 degrees retard to the cam timing and set the ignition timing at 18-20 btdc. should be good for peak 5whp.

retard the cam = top end (scavenges)

advance the cam = low end (pulls good but dies at top).

I was running mine retarded for a while and my mpg sucked but it pulled hard to rev limiter. I recently advanced it again and it pulls hard off the line and seems to have good low end torque. Best of all, mpg went back up. My last tank was 34 mpg! not too shabby with a cam and injectors.
