I own a 98 civic dx with a d16y7. Now the problem is that when I have the car in reverse and apply the brakes and turn off the car it stays running until I either take it out of park or release the brake. Now if the car is off and I put it in reverse and hit the brake the warning lights on the dash come on like you have the key on. Also the reverse lights come on when the brakes are applied under normal driving conditions and when you put the car in reverse the tail lights come on. I hope its not too bad of a problem I really like the car. Thanks for all the help.

advice for the advisor:

get the wiring diagram for your car, and see where, if any, the wire for the brake lights are anywhere near the ignition wires, and check for a short :p also, you could use a multimere and check for a continuity between the wire that is for the ON part of the ignition switch, and the wire for your brake lights.

Well I didn't think it was in the ignition cause most of the problems accur when the key is out and the ignition is off. A guy at advance auto told me it could be my reverse switch gone bad and bleeding back into the system. I was hoping to not have to trouble shoot my whole wiring system. What a pain. Thanks for all the starting options.

Ok No key in ignition put in reverse(5 speed manual btw) hit brakes. Dash warning lights come on relay at ecu kicks on I think I here the fuel pump kick on then ecu relay kicks out. Now car started in reverse brakes pressed. Turn car off pull key out.car still runs warings lights on but running very dim like low voltage going to them let off brake or shift from reverse car totally tuns off. No radio or any other electric device works once key is out either way. Just Dash lights

if its a 98 the ignition harness should run right in front of the brake switch. has anyone put an alarm or remote start in the vehicle? check to see that no wires are exposed. those ignition harnesses also had a huge recall...did you get it swapped out?
