ok this is something my uncle in law told me how to do he know how to cuz he used to drive big rigs anyways i done this on my 96 civc and a madza mx6 turbo and had no problem doing it
ok this it what you do put the car in fitrst like you would normaly do and when u get to about 3kor 3.5k pull the stick into second with out pushing the clutch it will go in to gear when the rpm hits around 2.4k. when i do i on my civic it goes very smooth when doing other gears do it the same but when u do it to go to 5th gear you gotta do it fast before ya rpm drops... also when chaning the gears u have to pull it back nicely not like your racing and keep the force untill it goes into gear.
saving gas
change 1st gear at 2.3k rpm in first and 3k rpm in all other gears save a shit load of gas

doesn't save any gas and it causes excessive wear and tear on the shifter forks.
Even "bumping" the stick into neutral while coasting down causes wear.
I still go through 1-2 shifter forks a year!!!!!!!

I found that with a y8, best mileage is shifting at about 3500, and then cruising at 60 or so. With mostly highway, that'll give ya 38 mpg. And monitor the VTEC usage! Treat it like nitrous and you'll save lotsa fuel. I usually expect a 1 mpg loss per tank for every 5-10 times using VTEC, depending on duration of the run. (It takes fewer times for 3rd gear accelerations onto freeways, they suck the juice pretty good)
As a bonus, the shifts from 3500 are really easy to make smooth. With experience, it can almost feel like an auto shifting.

Yeah, 3500 is a good shift point. I try to cruise between 2500 & 3500, seems to work well. And like you said, be easy on the shifting. I've actually had people ride with me and when they get out say "I didn't know that your car was a stick... didn't feel like it"

i did your method and all i get is bad grinding noises. i might have fucked up my gears. i don't know, but i'm gonna check when the weather gets warmer.

yea it makes that noise if ya rpm drops to low but ATTENTION PEOPLE I DO NOT TAKE RESPONABILTY FOR YOUR ACTION THANK YOU

uh, to achieve best gas mileage you all should check out you're owners manuals....they tell you at what MPH to shift at

2900 rpm, keep it below that and let long term fuel tables handle the rest.
No idea what I mean?????????

powershifting is never good
even if it somehow saves you gas, its not gonna save you from having to switch your tranny once you mess up

Long term/short term fuel trims :) I'm nowhere near your age Bone but I am none the less in your world :) How do I save gas with my mostly highway travels? TAILGATING!!!
Most of the traffic consists of SUV's and Suburban type Explorer trucks and the usual tractor trailer. I get right up on their ass. Yeah I'm one of those assholes that when you look in the mirror you cant see my headlights. IT saves me a crapload of gas though lol! Drafting anyone?

you enjoy driving with a big SUV in front of you?
i usualy try to go around them... i hate being behind someone... i have this stupid urge to always be ahead of the pack.
Bizzar
05-26-2004, 10:18 AM
Yeah most of us have that urge too but down here everyone drives like a madman on the highway. Traffic "flows" around 80-85mph so I feel no need to go any faster. I already got a Bs ticket from traveling in a pack of SUV's.

asssholes that tailgate me get a nice big and fast DOWNSHIFT, fuckers dont see it comming
and if they ram me i get huge cash settlement

05-26-2004, 07:46 PM
Ahh but thats the beauty of tailgating. Not only do you save gas but it eggs the driver infront of you on and gives you a good excuse to down shift her and wiz on by lol. Yeah I hate tailgaters too and brake check em but if I see a big rig movin at a good clip I'm there buddy.

If you save .01c of gaz per full tank, where did you find other $ to replace fork and syncro in tranny , you will save with method of driving and good setup for that & tune-up... LOL... If cars have clutch, it better to use that, if you are too lazy to push on this thing, go with automatic Golf TDI, you will find economy that you want with no clutch :P
Tell your uncle that Honda doesn't have yet Speed shift pro 400 semi-automatic tranny... :)

Hell yeah! I don't have abs on my 95 dx sedan but some asshole gets behind me and tailgates I wait untill they get really close then put my foot to the floor on my brake pedal! If they don't hit me at least I scared the shit out of them.

nah see in you situation some of the fault could be attributed to you, unessesary braking or somethign like that
if i downshift for one thing who's to say that i slowed down at all? he just sped up too much and crashed into my back
i never slowed down, what you talkin about fool :)
and if worst comes to worst i can say that i misshifted... oops

i actually had to do that no pedal shifting when the clutch cable broke on my moms sentra acouple of years ago. i wouldnt do it intentionally though.

derek i hate your kind. If you followed me like that youwo uld get the ebrake and downshift at once....then id see your headlights swerving back and forth as you loose control not to hit me ...doooh

sorry to bug you....but is there anywhere i can read up on this more? or anyway i could get some kind of explanation? the long-term fuel tables intrigue me :)

its non existent, its called powershifting, something to do with the mainshaft spinning at the same speed as the gear or something or other, so the gears line up and you dont need to clutch per se...
its puts a stupid amount of wear and tear on your tranny and shift fork, so DONT DO IT
if you want gas savings, dont race, ever, and keep it below 3000K, and never engage vtec.

05-31-2004, 12:25 PM
I know not engaging the clutch during a shift is bad, and whatnot...
How about not letting off the gas during a shift... Like lets say Im "flushing it", I reach 7200rpms, drop the clutch but keep my gas floored, and throw the next gear quickly?? Would that cause damage as well...
Just from the thought of it I would think my clutch would go first... And is there any benefit anyone knows of... Because my friend says thats the fastest way to shift, but i dont like listening to my friends because half the time they are talking out their asz...
Sorry for the Thread Hi-jack... I am the E-Taliban....

FLOORING IT during a shift is a no-no , especialy when you shift at the redline

your clutch would become a polishing wheel pretty quickly

haahahah, screw FF, i still dont understand why he said " didnt double clutch ", wtf you need to double clutch on modern cars, the syncro's we got now are state of the art...
that movie is whack
and NOS DOESNT EXPLODE EITHER... its an OXIDIZER for crying out loud.... you open a bottle next to a match it will BLOW IT OUT....
sorry for the rant

yea... so.... use your clutch, and let off the gas... lol

I never lift when shifting while racing.
Yes it is hard on the clutch, but even harder on the shifter forks.
Going fast has it's price.
My price is $55 shifter forks.
7thGear
06-02-2004, 08:53 AM
what dont u ever lift? your gas foot or your clutch foot?
if you have your gas FLOORED during a RACE SHIFT that means your shifting at REDLINE,
if your foot is FLOORED and you switch gears, you will send your engine into KO... wtf you guys talking about??!!
PRcivicHB
06-02-2004, 09:56 AM
Hmmm interesting... and thats coming from the guy that ran 15.1 with a stock D16z6 on street tires...
Im guessing i could do it on track and race days.... I have got to learn how to repair a tranny...
Maybe if u shift a little before redline, and quick enough, you wont hit the revlimiter...
I'm going to try it the next time at the track to get back to back 1/4 mile comparos...

2500 rpm every shift...grandma style....hehehe
7thGear
06-04-2004, 07:29 PM
just stick to normal style
this isnt that advanced tranny where when your in 1st gear 2nd is already engaged, and when you engage 2nd first and 3rd are moving at the same time, and all you have to do is move the lever with no footwork...
do yourself and the car a favor and exercise that left foot.
transzex
06-04-2004, 10:56 PM
I do use my left foot, but don't lift the right foot.
Nothing wrong with bumping the revlimiter.
But since mine is at 7800 and I shift at 7000..............
or maybe, I can drive/shift faster and overrev is not a issue.......

I tried keeping the gas floored while racing a B13 Classic...
I noticed my rpms would not drop as much as before after a shift, and i just kept going...
Only down side was that my tires spun alot from 1st to 2nd, besides that it seemed great @ 2nd and 3rd gear...
As for the sentra, all he saw was tail lights 2 cars ahead of him (street racing is bad, D-series.org has nothing to do with what PRcivicHB does on his spare time)...
Now all i gotta do is learn how to work the left leg and right hand to shift quicker... Im getting there...

when im racing i dont keep the gas floored but i keep it about halfway down, it seems to keep the revs higher but i figure it doesnt screw the clutch up as much... idk could be wrong im just a n00b with a mission...

Wow, I saw this thread and had to share my .02. Powershifting will not save any gas, however if done correctly will not hurt anything. I have several hundred thousand miles of standard transmission driving under my belt over 20+ years of driving. I have never replaced a clutch and have never babied one either. I bought an 84 accord with 27000 miles on it and drove it til 185000, then a 88 civic with 36000 buried it with 207000, and now a ford ranger with 43000 still alive with 187000. each and every one of these vehicals was used to the fullest extent ok abused and I'm lazy when it comes to pushing in the clutch but that don't mean you have to hear grinding either I guess that it is just a kind of skill

This is wack, if it does save gas, then it would save like a pint of gas, the only reason it does save is becasue your shifting so low, and not winding the motor out
