i have read many times that installing a shorter gear in the final drive will better your acceleration. i dont know anything about that and what is involved in it. can someone explain what this is supposed to do, how to do it and what should someone look for when performing this upgrade..
thanks

You need to change tranny, get closer gearing ratio...
You will shift more to get same given speed, but you will loose on top end if 5th gear is not overdrive.
A better clutch will be good, and lightweigt flywheel will be 'awesome' (don't go under 8.8-9lbs)
This overall setup give you a better acceleration !

only if you have the traction to plant the power.

i've heard that the ex/si trannies are the best for such. would that be a good idea for this guy to go with?

first off, need ALOT more info about his car and desired goals in the forum he chooses to race in.
For example, Mid Ohio, I plan on using a 93 DX tranny with ZC 3-4-5 gearing and 20" slicks.
Gear RPM1* RPM2 Speed @ 8000 RPM
1st 0000 8000 36.11
2nd 4335 8000 66.64
3rd 6115 8000 87.18
4th 6140 8000 113.60
5th 6800 8000 133.65
Look at the 2-3, 3-4, 4-5 upshift points.

20in slicks make the car feel completely different.
on those slicks,my car felt like a s20 tranny with a 4.7 final drive

I heard people who had some idle problems with Ultra light weight under 8.8lbs... Sure, It was for street use. If you had race car that only race on track, maybe it's good too ! but I read about ultralightweight more since this time, for race track: lighter than possible, for dragstrip: don't go under 10-12lbs because you will loose a little bit when you shift....
But finally my opinion will be stronger when I try some on my car :)

I'm getting a hybrid tranny for my 89 CRX Si with DOHC ZC.
1-4 ZC
5 HF
DF Si
I've driven Kwicko's rex with the tranny and it is very nice. Quick pickup and nice low rpm highwy cruise. Effin Motorworks (http://www.effinmotorworks.com)in Austin TX will be building mine. They have a great page about the tranny on their website. Click on parts.
