I have a obd1 d15z1 motor. This is the engine that comes in the vx hatch with vtec-e. But the head is sitting in my garage as "paper weight" because I swapped to y8 head/mani and p28 ecu. I will be getting the z6 greddy turbo kit. The question is should I just use the black/blue box that comes with the kit or should I run with the afc mod? I have heard that the greddy box wastes fuel or "dumps fuel" as some say but other than that does it suck or what? I dont believe it is tunable and I have heard good things with the AFC setup(afc, dsm 450 injectors, larger fuel pump). I dont plan on keeping this motor for longer than 1.5 years so would it be worth buying the AFC or stick with greddy management.

^^the only problem with that would be there is no way you can give him a "good" tune that will last. You can give him a base tune that will get his car running, but there is no way you could burn him a chip that he won't have to re-tune himself. Not to bash your generousity. If he is interested in buying a burner and getting into it, that would be a great idea and I would suggest it.

The AFC is a very good way of manageing up to 10psi. Anything more and you will need better management, such as the above mentioned. If you plan on running low amounts like say 6psi, I would just save your money and buy a shitty ass FMU.

How much boost were you planning on running?

i wasent talking about something perminate. I was just talking about a base map so his ecu would actually read boost thats all i made one for my friend who has a d16y8 setup and he just tunes it with his piggyback equipment but then he can have his car tuned while haveing the ecu actually read boost.

all im getting to is it is alot easier to tune a car with an ecu that acutually has the maps so it can read boost rather than tricking it with a check valve or somethig of that nature

I was just clarifying it for him. I doubt he is going to want to buy both just to do one job, ya know? Plus, it sounded like you were saying he could juts slap the chip in and go and not worry about tuning, because without saying contrary, that's what it would sound like.

It's alot easier for the ECU, not the tuner. The average person doesn't know shit about tuning with a programmer. An AFC is super easy to use and tune with. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying an AFC is better than a programmed ECU, I'm just saying it's alot easier for the average Joe car enthusiast.

thanks for answering.....this computer f...up and i have to rewrite this reply so i am sorry that it looks sloppy...but i will run 6psi until i get an intercooler....since the blue box comes with the greddy kit, i want to use that for starters....UNLESS that box sucks from the getgo..i guess my question really is:: would i gain an advantage using the afc at 6psi instead of the greddy blue box?? i kinda want to stay away from chips and since the temporary motor isnt going to be built for high boost i will not use hondata or any standalone. When i do get an intercooler i plan on running 8-10 psi and i know i will run the afc mod then.. so do you think I should buy the afc when i get the kit OR should I just use the blue box until i am ready to get the intercooler and turn up the boost?
