View Full Version : All ZC swaps post your fastest 1/4 miles times here

Hey I was just curious of what everyone is running at the 1/4 mile with their ZC swap. I ran mine during the summer and only ran 17 flat, but that was without my Nitrous, Cold air intake, and using my stock exhaust and to top it off I had a bad vacuume problem that was making my car $hit out black smoke. List your fastest time here and what you're running under the hood, Im curious to see what the ZC can really do, but feel free to post even if you don't have a ZC.

exact year, type, model of car (ie 91 crx si, 88 civic lx)
temperture and humidity when ran
type and size of tires
size and weight of wheels
your weight
if the car was gutted or full interior
altitude above sea level
and i think im missing a few things, but all are needed
for a real comparison of 1/4 mile times.

i ran a 15.4 on my zc/si tranny.......with the crappiest tires known to man....absolute crappiest traction wise....my snow tires. it had intake/header/exhaust-all custom stuff, my own design. i recently added a milled head, 3 angle valve job, exospeed stage 2 cams, and some mild port work, soon, it will be ITB time.

i use a highpower (http://www.noswizard.com) streetblaster wet system. excellently designed and high quality, though it doesn't have the 'looks' of other makes. personally i don't care about how shiny my bottle is, no one ever says "that turbo looks good in anodised purple"
i've recently gone up to a 75 shot and fully progressive controller. don't have any times for that yet, as it has eaten 2 clutches :(
the exhaust is the standard d16a9 exhaust, which doesn't have a cat. (only vtec mk2's got a cat in the uk, as unleaded petrol was not widely available until approx 1990)[/url]

this was an old friends car from 4 years ago. we did everything to the car and hit the track quite often. by the way, he had a real healthy ZC, before any mods, his car would put it to modded ZC swaps. but, like they say, sometimes stock is better! here's the list:
1991 CRX SI mild weight removal. 2130 lbs without driver
JDM ZC motor completely stock internals
91 SI tranny
1991 SI ECU w/PYR allmotor program
6 puck sprung hub clutch disc
clutchmasters pressure plate
15 " gsr wheels with toyo proxes
Adj FPR
1990 prelude injectors
DC sports d-series header 4-2-1
2.5 mandrel bent exhaust (no cat, no premuffler, just canister)
custom cold air intake
and one really good driver
end result: 14.8's qtr mile all motor.. this was at MOROSO speedway summertime about 80-90 degree temp avg
now here is when things got fun!
NOS dry system
40 shot : 14.1 @102 mph.
80 shot : 14.0 @110 mph!!
yes 14.0 because he had problems with the micro switch and didn't get a full pass on the 80 shot. but look at the mph. that is a 12 sec MPH easy. on the street this car was sick and he was one of the best street racers i've ever known. His name is Eory and he now lives in Texas.

Thats not too bad with four diff tires on it. I did the same type of run this summer with four different tires a major Vacuum prob, stock shitty exhaust and a full interior and still ran 17.0 But like I said my vacuum lines were all backwards and it was making me blow out black smoke out the rear, that and I had something up with my ecu wire harness. But I took it too a mechanic and everything is cool now.

Ok this is kinda odd. I am new to your fine site but as I read what was posted I am confused like hell. I have a JDM sohc ZC (I know its from Japan because I talked to the guy over the phone in Japan) and I have dynoed at MUCH higher than the stock D16a6 that came in my 90 SI. My original D16A6 was in GREAT shape prefect cam and rocker arm assem. My ZC was a crate motor that had literally 0 miles on it. I ran my D16a6 at IRP's 1/4mile and only managed a 16.5 while I have put down a 15.9 in limp mode (my TD-18u has gone bad) with all of my stereo equipment in the back. (I am the M1 class state record holder for Mecca Car Audio and 14th in the country) So either than line about the D16a6 is the exact same thing as a sohc ZC is complete Bullsh!t or by the hand of god I ran .6 faster in LIMP MODE mind you no more than 1month later with more wieght in the car..... :?

01-08-2004, 02:26 PM
Ok here they are.
90 Civic Si with Jdm sohc ZC si tranny.
mods: custom CAI, 8mm plug wires, (i hate them) Bosch plat.+4 plugs, exhaust is just cut after then rear suspension, brand new clutch just a bit better than oem (didn't have the money for a centerforce when I did the swap)
mods I wish I didn't have: Limp mode ecu (my distb. is bad, damn TD-18u), probably 150lbs of stereo in the back (my sub alone weighs in at over 50lbs)
Wheels: 85 CRX si wheels (13in) with sumitos HTR 200+ 215-50R tires
Weight: Probably 2,570 with driver (2,200 oem 220lbs fatass driver and 150lbs worth of stereo)
time: first run 16.5
second run 16.3
third run 16.7 (missed third gear)
fourth run: 15.9 at 89mph (I think thats right, I know the time is right but I can't remember if the speed is right but its damn close if not) I will try to find the time slip.
All of this was done at IRP in Indy (if you didn't know) with massive tire spin off the line (I drop at 4500) and shift at 7200
if you have any questions about me or the car IM me on aol.

Hey 90sisohczc... if you gained .6 on the 1/4 mile because of the limp mode I'd keep it that way! lol. j/k are you sure its in limp mode, I doubt you were because when my shit went into limp mode due to the crank angle sensor falling off in my dizzy I couldn't get my car to go over like 40 or 50. Who knows, But thats still cool that you got your ride to go 15.9 with all that added weight and the computer problem.

No No No...lol I didn'tgain .6 because I was in limp mode. I ran the car before with the old D16a6 in it. It did sh!tty, I then swapped the old motor out for the Jdm sohc ZC and right after I did that I messed up my distb. while out at the local 1/8th mile track. (Lauching hurts them) And even though I was in limp mode I still managed to gain .6 on my 1/4 mile time with the new ZC. Which by most people's acounts is the same as the D16a6...hhhmmm....Sounds funny to me. So if this is so WHERE DID THIS .6 of a second come from. Its bullsh!t the guy I got the motor from dynoed it at 130hp (at the crank) and 111tq (at the crank). Which is the exact same numbers as the DOHC. Hell if I can find the dyno sheet they sent me with my motor I will scan it and put it up (which now that I am looking for it I will never find damn clutter)
So I don't care what anyone says if by the hand of god himself I have the only Sohc ZC that produces that kind of power stock SO BE IT. I am happy. Even though I could have gotten a B16a1 for $500 more (which I fount out just after I bought my motor).

I do know for a fact that the SOHC ZC does have a more aggressive cam. The one Ive got came with a carb manifold, mechanical fuel pump, and vacuum advanced dizzy. I had a Crane stage 2 laying around soo I swapped it out and I really am just not sure which I like better. But the ZC cam definitely has more midrange than an SI cam. I dont know if that helps at all but there ya go.

Just for fun I'll post my quarter mile time.
This was done a year ago before my ignition, denso iridium plugs and B&M fuel pressure regulator. It was also before Suspension techniques sway bars (which are heavier than stock).
I have a 91 civic si hatch (It might be called an ex in the States)
ZC motor, ZC tranny, ZC equal length drive shafts
ZC ECU (7800 rev limit)
Centerforce clutch
5zigen 16 inch rims (kumho tires)
Thermal exhaust
AEM cold air intake
Chikara headers
short throw shifter
Open catalytic (basically a resonator)
Sparco driver’s seat
I weigh about 200 lbs!
1/4 mile 15.4 at about 92mph (I forget the exact speed)
My 60 fts were slow since I was spinning quite a bit.
I was hitting about 6.8 0-60 times
Best time I could squeeze out of the old d16a6 was a 16.8 at ~88? Mph power shifting all the way. The ZC is way better!
91ZCcivic
02-05-2004, 11:24 AM
not bad at all. The 91 civic si hatch is the 91 civic si hatch in the states too. But with the ZC in you could almost look at it as a JDM Si... almost.

Taking my 1991 hatch to the track this Saturday at Cayuga (Toronto Motorsports Park). I am hoping to run in the mid 13 second range but we'll see. I want to turn up the boost past 10psi but my afc only adjusts +/-30% so anything above 10psi throws a check engine light. I need to find a voltage clamp. I am pretty happy so far though. I spent about $1000 on the turbo setup and did all of the tuning, installation and testing myself.

ive tried the zc swap best time i got out of that motor was a high 12 turbo charge wastnt all of what i think it will be so i switch a d16 z6 92 - 95 sohc vtec it was runnig 15.4 so i wasnt to happy . i took the zc pistons out of the motor and put it in the d16 z6 of corse higher compression it help out alot it drop to 14.1 best time. still wasnt to happy. so i took my dx block and send it off to darton to get it sleeve at 80 mm and put some 11.1 compression je piston in with crower rods and of crose the whole head was all crower product over size valves and everything. all motor at 12.7 on the 1/4. as you see wasnt happy either. wit all that money spent. so i went and purchase some 9.1 compression piston by cp and a stage 2 turbo cam gy crowers and slap my turbo on and BAM!!!! a big time different. still aint happy so thats where the nitrous is gonna come in
hope you guys and gals here learn something from my mistake by going to a zc not to putting down the zc. the zc is a good motor ive even done it myself but im more happy with the mini me dx block with a vtec head try it sometime it will make you think twice
