View Full Version : Automotive lightbulb options? 194, etc...

Any suggestions on automotive light bulbs?
I'm looking for some amber bulbs for my front corner lights (style 194). I want something that is really bright tho. I've tried the regular Sylvania amber 194s and they suck. They're not very bright and the paint fades and flakes off pretty quickly.
I'm also reluctant to go with those uber expensive Polarg bulbs etc. I need four total and I don't want to pay $25-$30 for those little tiny bulbs.
If anyone knows of some alternative bulbs that run a little higher wattage or something? (At the same time, I'm not trying to melt my wires...)
Anyways, any suggestions are welcome.

you can use the newer 194LL's the "head" of the bulb is barely small enough to fit into the corner lens. You might have to shave/sand the bulb entry to fit it. they come in amber though and are as bright as the headlights......

Thanks for the replies
As far as the '194LL' bulbs... The LL = long life. I am not under the impression that they are any brighter though. However, I may pick up a set and do a side-by-side comparison to see for sure. I know that they make other wedge bulbs with different wattages and bulb sizes that would potentially be a lot brighter, but like you said, I'd have to modify the hole on the lens to accept a larger bulb. Does anyone know of any bulbs comparable in size to the 194 that run higher wattages?
And the LEDs... You can get them on ebay for really cheap, but I don't know about the quality of those. (you get what you pay for) And the other thing with LEDs is I definitely want the light to illuminate the entire lens. LEDs are a directional light source, and I don't want a bright pinpoint of light coming out of the lens while the rest is unilluminated. (However, a lot of makers are trying to address this issue by putting multiple LEDs in the bulb, firing in several directions. But still, I have clear corners, and I'm afraid that the pinpoint lightsource effect would be very pronounced.
I might just have to order some and see how I like them though.
Oh well.

as for LEDs... you can carefully file the top of the LED flat and give it some roughness to diffuse the light better...
hmmm, still debating whether or not I should give up my secret:
(need to fix the fuel gauge)

I've only got crappy, teeny-tiny, impossible to find, little light bulbs on plastic SCREWS that shine down across my gauges and don't illuminate worth a damn!.
Yeah, it's an '89... wanna fight?!?
