^ pretty much summs it up. 92 civic dx's alternator can't handle 1200watt amp very well, looking to upgrade. Can you rewind an alternator yourself? What's it cost professionally? Any suggestions for buying a new one?

Have them rewound, however, your alternator cannot handle the instantaneous current needs of your amp. Supplement with an extra battery and a battery isolator and a capacitor.

I paid $250 for a rewound high amp output alt 8 years ago! Capable of 140+ amps and it hasnt let me down yet. I used to run an Orion HCCA at .25 ohm on 8 10" subs, 4 battery caps. A new one can be had for under $100 from say Autozone.

you paid 250 to get yours rewound? that 100$ from autozone sounds mighty appealing... Though i'm betting that's a stock replacement alternator, right?

I had one rewound for my beetle........30amps-140amps.....driving two BD 1000's and a 550x. No problems if it's done by someone who knows what they're doing.
