Parts are coming in and its going to be GO time soon. As some of you have seen my a/c controls fabbed on the left side of the dash well it gets better...
Installing a 8" touchscreen monitor into my dash (in place of the stock a/c and radio) but this is no ordinary LCD. Its for PC's AND consoles. Everything will be at the touch of my finger. Cd's stored on a hard drive, DVD, PC Games and a PS2. It will also have TV and AM/FM all via a Remote. The best part will be Uberdata tuning in dash!! I have an Ostrich unit that does on-the-fly tuning and a wideband for datalogging. All of this on one simple screen. So today at lunch I began the schematics of it all. Have a look of my future upgrades. Can you say High Tech Honda!! Whats next? GSPS :P

Most of the stuff I already have. All I purchased was the monitor $290 shipped, Soundblaster card $100, USB port and extensions $60, External dvd-cdr $90, wireless mini keyboard $45. So really its not that bad. Sure it adds up and is pretty pointless but to each his own right? BTW I got the touchscreen in yesterday and OMFG its NICE!! DVD picture is friggin awesome better than ANY flip screen - cd/dvd in car player I have seen, Super high res. The PC input looks damn good too and Uberdata is very easy to see even though the numbers are tiny. Touch screen works good too. Playing Pc games on it WOW!! So damn clear I was playing NFSU2. I have already pulled the dash apart and began wiring. This weekend I will start on the fabbing but still undecided how I want to do it. I may make a fake removable a/c radio panel to hide the indash touchscreen. We will see room is VERY tight with this 8" monster. The ol dremel is gonna get a workout for sure.

Micro ATX basicaly a small desktop PC in the spare tire well. I thought about an actual "carpc" but they just dont have the video power I am looking for. Especialy not for 900 bones!! Will be running your basic Windows XP Pro nothing fancy. It doesnt draw that many amps really. The monitor is 12v and I already have a high output alternator from when I did stereo competitions years ago. Its capable of 140 amps so no problem there. I wont be able to sit with the engine off for long though lol hell I never could. I will be using the Soundblaster software with the remote for the controls of surround, cd and dvd. Going with 5.1 surround instead of 7.1 (no reason for a rear center channel lol). Plans are:
In dash 8" touchscreen conceled behind a false ac/radio panel.
I have a JDM audio console where the extra USB and external dvd/cdrw drive will go.
Power inverter and PC in the spare tire well (where my current sub amp is) I may fab it with a nice vinyl/plexi cover for viewing pleasure.
The sub amp will be relocated to the speaker box itself with a quick disconnect so I can remove it for weekend track fun. That is the heaviest item and as you can see I am not really into the whole weight reduction deal. I like my comfort! I can have my cake and eat it too right? don't worry I will have plenty of pics on the progress. Tonight the seats and carpet come out for de-wiring. UHG!~!
As for the PS2 well I am STILL trying to decide if its worth purchasing for GT4. Theres also a new NHRA game coming out soon. I sold my XBOX a few months ago because I never used it. I'm thinking the same with a PS2 we will see. Either way I have a shitload of PC games that simply look and perform amazing on this little screen. Wireless controllers for passengers fun eh? Anyone up for a road trip and a Madden showdown?

how would you get the pc to work with the touchscreen. ive installed a touchscreen at work but it was a kit that came with the carpc, touchscreen monitor, sattelite tv, drivesoft, etc. i never thought i could use a touchscreen for pc capabilities.
Bizzar
03-18-2005, 06:17 AM
Its designed for PC's. Basicaly the touch works just as your mouse cursor. Tapping the screen opens files etc. I've already tested it and it works good. Its a Lilliput 8" FYI.
Bizzar
03-18-2005, 09:02 PM
Change of plans...
After "testing" out the soundblaster its staying in my gaming pc lol. It sounds way too badass to put in my car. I guess I will just use my pioneer input for now until I can afford another soundcard. Also ditching the fake ac panel. For one I would have to buy another a/c control head and two, you cant hardly see in my car with the limo tint so screw it. I've already got a shitload of work to do as it is right now.

daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn, you not gonna get a shielding problem from the HU and CD/DVD rom???
Bizzar
03-22-2005, 11:31 PM
Nope already tested EVERYTHING out with the car running. No noise interference, gound loops nadda. All I am worried about is the hard drive taking a dump on the first solid bass note lol. Everything that has a chassis is grounded (cd player, dvd, pc rack, psu to pc rack, rca cables from unit to unit etc)
Fooshitinkinjssomethingorother
03-22-2005, 11:32 PM
Shouldn't be too much of a probelm if they don't interfere with hard drives. You'd be surprised the shielding some devices have. I've seen in-dash double-din changers similar to that.

03-22-2005, 11:34 PM
one central ground spot in the back, or random spider web stuff?.........dude, that shit looks TIGHT.................gonna vent the power supply for the Comp???
makku
03-22-2005, 11:36 PM
that's nuts... i hope you aren't using any PCI cards in the computer. They will get shaken loose eventually... i'd use an all-in-one motherboard.
very impressive though!
flatfourfan
03-22-2005, 11:38 PM
What size inverter are you using there?..........
Bizzar
03-22-2005, 11:39 PM
Two gound points for everything, one up front one in the rear. Both the carpc and power supply will have fans. That is what I was working on tonight. I am making a cover with dual lighted fans (on in one out) with a plexi view cover. Once its all done you will see :) I should have the back half done within a day or two. The biggest challenge was keeping power wires on one side of the car, all rca signal wires go down the center and all data lines (usb) are on the lower middle floorboard. The main stock harness is on the left side so I did not run any wires down that side to avoid and interference. The tricky part is avoiding the damn fuel pump wires and the rear seat so nothing can get pinched.
EDIT: after i posted you posted, Makku all PCI cards, USB's, IDE cables, RCA's everything is hot glued with high temp glue. I've done it before it wont come loose and isnt permanent.
EDIT again: damnit stop posting while I type lol!! 400 watt inverter, 250 watt PSU. An all -in-one motherboard (onboard audio and vid) suck ass!! They dont have the power and graffical capability I am running. Think about it. My passengers can play Doom3 or NFS2U at high res, madden games maxed out etc. Nice smooth video games that spank a Playstation or XBox. I havent ruled out a ps2 yet though. GT4 looks really tempting.

that is some impressive shit!! way out of my league
flatfourfan
03-22-2005, 11:46 PM
shit, you've thought of everything...............personally I'd run the USB through the roof........lol..........:TU:....good work bro
Bizzar
03-22-2005, 11:49 PM
HAH thought about that too but you can't. The max length for USB is 16 feet before data starts to get corrupted. Thats why you dont ever see usb extensions over 15 foot. Most are 10' ( 10 foot extension plus the normal 6 foot the device comes with). Once you run UP to the headliner, down a pillar, along the floor you are over your limit. Bummer eh?
makku
03-22-2005, 11:54 PM
I'm sure there is something like a powered junction that would allow you to run longer USB cables... i guess the problem is where to put it... dome light!! :)
btw, yeah, for good video you need a card, but ASUS makes some AWESOME motherboards with builtin sound. my favorite brand of motherboard...
flatfourfan
03-22-2005, 11:54 PM
hmmmmm, I had my USB running through teh roof of my old beetle.......nice cause the radio was un the glove compartment with the DVD rom, RIGHT next to teh A-pillar..did it mainly so that I didn't have to have everything going under the carpets...
I forgot about the 16foot deal, I've never had to have a cord over 8.

pssst it IS an ASUS. A7V to be specific. Its a little old and outdated but it does the job nicely. 1.5ghz (slow in todays standards) with a Gforce4 TI 4600 2g pc-133ram and for now a 60gb hard drive. I bought a soundblaster audigy2NX that was originaly for this project but all my games sound so badass I kept it for my gaming beast lol. I plan on upgrading to a SATA drive for the car and getting another audigy. My home gaming machine on the other hand...
Athlon 64 3500+
BFG Geforce 6800 GTOC
2 gig corsair XMS extreme memory series low latency PC 3200

funk that! You will NEVER get as clear a picture on an LCD as a CRT. you have to run games at pretty much the resolution of the monitor NOT what you want. Plsu for a good quality low latency LCD (12ms or less) you will pay out the ass! My buddy has a nice 19" and it ghosts pretty bad. No thanks I like my CRT :)
Dash...I'm using the glass/bondo (blue can) for most, regular bondo for filling and spot puddy. I will have pics of the dash this weekend. The PC rack is screwed into the spare tire well straight through the floor. She aint moving. The hard drive is insulated on raised rubber bumpers. We will see if it works or not lol.

You should be OK on the HD bit as long as you don't hit a bump or something while the HD is accessing - instant data corruption if its bad enough, i.e. a pothole or other sudden, jarring impact. Most HDs are pretty well insulated to withstand a shock - as long as the platter isn't spinning and the needle is parked (think record player here). But, you sound like you know what you're doing. If I could play Half-Life 2 in a traffic jam....that's one step closer to heaven!
youd be the reason of the traffic jam probly lol

I wont buy a LCD till the ms gets down to 2 or 1. This year they are gonna realse the 8ms ones. Every year they seem to be cutting the latency in half. On the topic of your hdd just throw it in a sheilded bag or something if you wanna be extra safe. Only problem i might see you having is maybe cooling issues.

Coming along nicely. Wiring officialy DONE!!! All that is left is the dash fabrication. Everything is up and running and WORKING WOOHOO!! Games look so badass on this thing I can't wait to post some pics of the final install. Next weeks agenda...finishing up the monitor mounting and fab and thats it. A/C controls are done I just need to get some pics taken. For the Carputer power/reset buttons I used a Cat5 line, wall jack and a quick dissconnect. So far no engine noise, no funky image ghosting, interference nadda everything looks and works good. I mounted an additional USB 2.0 port under the glove box for game controllers etc, aux power switch (unused at this time for future upgrades). I still have some cosmetic shit to do to the hatch but its up running and working. Heres a few pics to hold you over

This was done in 2 weeks time working to 2-3am and getting up at 6:30am. Yes 3-4 hours sleep for nearly 2 weeks solid. I think I missed a few nights because I was flat beat. I only worked on it a few hours a night doing what I can after my family goes to bed. Time is hard to come by and there just isnt enough hours in a day.

Is that a touch screen??? Dude, do you realize what a monster car you could make with that? Setup your ecu for Real-time programming and have someone make you a nice touch-screen GUI for changing fuel and ignition parameters on the fly! WOW... I would be doing that in a heartbeat!

you BASTARD!!j/k can't see the pics here at work, but from i can tell AWESOME job, definitley rep points for this one. out of curiuosity, what are using as a hard drive, do can laptop drives really take this much punishment? i only ask because i was going to do this until i starting thinking of a hard drive rig to handle all the bumps and shit.
P.S. nice job.

04-07-2005, 11:18 AM
Dry run? Heh been driving it all week while I do the rest of the interior. The harddrive is just a 160gb Western digital 7200rpm nothing fancy. So far it has handled every bass note, every speed bump, every hard shift and heat. It is mounted to a sheet metal mounting plate that is screwed directly to the car chassis so its very stiff. No insulation nadda just to see what she will take. Tuning on the touchscreen with Uberdata and my Ostrich flat owns! I will never go back to a damn chip burner and a laptop again lol.

Ok its time for another update. Everything has been going good and man I am loving it! Its been hard to find time but it is coming together. I am installing the rest of the interior tomorrow, got the doors recovered in black, seats dyed and all the pieces painted...FINALY phew! The doors came out pretty good not the best but I am very happy with the look. No more blue!!! Heres a few videos and some pics sorry no sound I have a cheap digicam. The image is crappy in the vids but you get the idea. It shows how the touch screen works and how Uberdata is used on it. Next week I will take some vid of actual datalogging and tuning with the car running. Maybe some dvd's or some games :) the picture on the actual screen is so damn clear but its very hard to tell in the vids. The files are pretty big 9 mb I think. Enjoy.

just be careful. I once drove a computer to a friends house and going down the highway I guess I hit too big of a bump and the computer took too hard of a hit. when I got there, the computer wouldn't work, I opened it up and found out that the heat sink came down on the processor and cracked the core.

Awesome job man. I love the custom dash. Good luck with the HD, these days hard drives can take stupid amounts of abuse, especially WD, but it might not be a bad idea to think up some shock absorbtion for it. If you don't, just dont keep anything on that drive you can't replace (not that you would).
Again, awesome job. How's the abilty to change fuel maps on the fly workin out?

I'd say it's a rather unique looking supercharger, but that's only 'cause i don't know much about superchargers. However, if that's photoshoped, then i'm thoroughly impressed, you can even see the reflection of the distributor plugs in the "Power Cooler" thing. Additionally the light all seems to be comming from the right directions. Personally i think it's a real pic, and i don't see any real reason he'd fake it, given the money spent on the rest of his car. Even if he did, his comments section would be full of people who've actually seen his car calling him out on it.

sorry to take so long to get back, but look at the engine pic closer. The bar/rod coming across the engine, above the header, has absolutely noooo reflections of anything in that engine bay. And neither does it have and change in the light of the reflection all the way across it. Also it seems to run directly into the cooling pipe from the radiator. Photoshop is not a hard program to use if learned correctly and I have seen some AMAZING stuff done with that program. I'm not saying that it is entirely fake, however just from that picture and my experience with photoshop, I personally think its a fake.

after looking at it for a little bit...I would agree with you....it's not like blue plug wires are that rare, and for that matter, the reflection of the strut tower bar on the after cooler isn't the right color....or shade for that matter. Also you're right about the bar going through the upper rad hose. He should have spent more time photochopping it...or just spent more money on real parts...lol

Still going strong. I did have to redo some of the pci slots with MORE hot glue. On a hard shift or accell the system would reboot from the AGP card rocking back in the slots. Some more hot glue kept it all in check and all is good now. Even holds up to clutch dumps. When I leave work I watch the end of Malcolm in the Middle, then the news at 6. Gotta love mobil entertainment and 50 minute drive to/from work.

no offense to your friend there...put if he honestly believes that then he is not to much of a computer buff...the laptop hard drives they make now are so durable that is what is used is most of the creative lab's mp3 players, i'm tlaking about the zen ones (40+GB)...and believe i know from experience the hard drives can take a beating...not only that but the full size (3.5 inch) are better than they use to be, meaning more shock resistant...granted when bizzar used the normal hard drive for use inside the car i thought he was crazy too, until i asked him about it and did some research and learned that what he is doing with it, isn't to unbelievable, now he might have to replace it eventually, but it will hold a goo damount of time...
props again to bizzar for the amazing DIY!!!

1. 400 Watt Power Inverter. The PC, Touchscreen and USB ports are powered on this.
2. Radio Shack
3. A shitload. I have no clue theres more than just fabbing the dash. Some alterartions to the actual dashboard had to be made for clearences. The a/c wire harness also had to be extended. Its a ton of hours put into it I would have no idea where to even start on a quote.
4. firewire. The PC I curently use does not have firewire and I do not plan to add it. I am not a fan of USB harddrives. I had one and it seemed to have more of a delay.

well, I should clarify, my setup is no where NEAR as complicated as Bizzars. The lilliput screen Im using is the 7 inch touch screen....

This almost SLIDES right into the JDM audio console. I have this hooked up to a laptop in my trunk. The extra buttons are no big deal, power is the only one I use....its a great custom setup......plus its like having an ipod, tuning software, dvd player all in one...

Same screen and even the same company (ebay user) I purchased it from. The buttons on the bottum were removed and tucked up in the dash. I have it modded to turn on with ign or with the remote which is mounted on the center console near the shifter. ( just infront of the ebrake handle). I run WinXP Pro and that software pictured is Roadrunner but I now use a variation called Mediacar. http://users.skynet.be/media-car/software.html also going to be working on converting a 15" desktop flatscreen LCD into an incar flipdown. I have a 13.3" tft flipdowown but its useless on a carpc. My video card DOES have TV out but the quality is very poor and the 13" lcd meant for cars only has a/v input. For now I am concentrating on the roof console which is coming out real nice! I also found 3 hotspots on my track to work where I can connect to internet :P hmmm I'm thinking webcam with live broadcast from in my car.

man the live broadcast would be cool. i ve thought about it as ive got a cam mounted just beneath my front bumper that displays on my flipout and ont he way to work is nothing but hotspots (heh i own like 10 of them now)
so how are the buttons attatched to the screem? is it a small ribbon cable or wires? just wonderign if its somethign that can be relocated else where (was thinking steering wheel for vol +- and power to the sreen)
like i said i had a few questions regarding some of your setup, i am very technical and capable of easily doing this but need more info to start. AIM:krikit114 Y!: sniper_jones1030

yeah, the cool thing is that if your in your driveway (and you have a wireless router) you can upload and dowload music to your trunk. I like that 2 incher Bizzar. Mines 7 :) ..lol. If you have the audio console, the 7 inchers will slide almost right into the double din spot near the ashtray......

BTW, that software was EXACLTY what I needed to make this setup more complete, I hope you dont mind if I use it.....

Great job.
How are you interfacing with the controls in the car? Are you using a parallel or serial port? Is this supported by mediacar?

Just an FYI, if anyone is using the Liliput 7" touch screen, and the touch screen dosent calibrate correctly, it may be the actual screen. I picked up a replacment for $50, easy to install, and works like a charm.
