View Full Version : Room Mate: paying the bills

So, I have this room mate, he has been a friend for many years. Since we moved into our apartment in mid december, he has disconnected himself from me. Rarely speaking to me, he plays an online game just about every waking moment that he is home, and he has not moved his stuff (lots and lots of boxes) into his bedroom, instead leaving them in the living room. Now, this just irritates me, it's difficult to have company over when there is nowhere for them to sit or be comfortable. On top of this, he refuses to lock the door when he leaves. Every day when I come home from work, the apartment is unlocked and noone home. When we moved in, we agreed to lock it when noone was here.

Ok, now onto the bills. All of the bills are in my name, some with him as a co-signer of sorts. Now, we got our power bill, which is due, cable bill which i paid, and phone bill. I have paid them all in full, and gave him an invoice for his half. I verbally notified him several times prior. On the "invoice" I gave a date, feb 4, no later. It's feb 5 now. Also, our rent is due, and this month our bill is prorated for 12 days in december. He apparantly talked to the manager and got the total bill, but did not inform me. I talked to the manager yesterday and was told the total, and he said that he told my roommate a week or two ago.

How should I go about getting my money from him. I have paid the bills, and he has played his games 24/7. He is extremely passive aggressive, and is difficult to talk to, especially when he's gaming....which is pretty much all day and night.

I have worked my ass off for the last 5 years building good credit, and I feel as if he is going to be bringing me down in the next 8 months.

Take his ass to court, and tell him you want him out. Court shouldn't be too much more money, and you can go and represent yourself. As long as you have copy's of the bills and everything you paid yourself.

Or you can shut off the phone for a month until he gives you the money. Then after he does turn the phone back on, call the phone company they will work with you.

I really dont want to take him to court, I dont want to make enemies here. I did consider turning the cable modem off, but he would just order it under his name, then not let me use it (he had it in his name at our last place, and he limited my internet use...which is REALLY FUCKING BAD, he "needed" his bandwidth for his games).

I could have the power turned off, since it is our biggest bill, but that hurts me as well. He said that he paid our rent already...which is NEWS TO ME. I love it how he failed to say anything at all.

Getting ahold of the manager here to see what I owe, before it's late (due by midnight), is next to impossible. I have not seen him for over a month, and there's someone at his apartment all the time, but nobody answers the fucking door, and he never answers his phone!

CHRIST IM PISSED OFF HERE

he'll just order it in his name, and not let me use it. Only one cable modem per household.

its in my name right now, but im not a jackass about it, I let him use it as much as he wants, since he is (supposed to be) paying for half of it.

He breached your contract. You have every right to demand the money from him. You set a date that you both agreed on IN WRITING. He did not pay. I know you don't want to make enemies, or be mean or what not, but you are going to keep suffering if you do not give him a wake up call. This guy doesn't sound very nice anyways. Can you really keep living your life with him like this? Take him to court, demand your money, and kick him out. You need a roommate that will be responsible enough to pay the bills at least. That was the agreement that was made when you two moved into the apartment, and he has not followed up on the agreement. An extreme move would be to shut off all the utilities that are in your name, and move out. Maybe he'll get a wake up call then. Bottom line is that guy needs to face reality. He needs to learn that he can't live his life bumming off another person's dollar. You owe him the wake up call. And you owe yourself to not be brought down along with him.

well, then put all the bills in his name... and start looking for a new place to move into.

Seriously, if you can't convince your roommate to not be an ass, you'll have to take him to court. Make life miserable for him and he'll move out... start looking for a new roommate too... just in case. This guy sounds like he sucks as a friend, so fuck him. (not literally)

Actually, start some massive downloads and keep them going at all times. Get your router and password protect it so he can't limit your bandwidth on it. The cable modem is a router itself... get into the cable modem and password protect it, too.

Unplug and plug in the cable at random times without him seeing you do it... interrupt his game all the time. If his game is pirated, then report him to the authorities annonymously. Get his IP banned from the server (then you can't play but it's a small price to pay).

well, here's how the network is setup... Cable modem goes to HIS router, then my line (ip address) goes to my switch in my bedroom. I was not home when the cable was installed, so he had the cable guy set it up in HIS work area, so he has the modem behind his computer.

are you wireless? because there are programs out there that allow you to control what percentage of bandwidth goes to what computer, so you have the ability to give yourself most of it.

does he lock his door? go and sabotage that router... or hack it. Go hide some food in a drawer of his somewhere. Let it rot and stink him out of his room...

Better yet, call the cable company and see if you can get them to block certain IP addresses from their side. Block ALL the counterstrike servers. Say that you have kids that you can't control and want them to stop playing so many video games.

Fuck that guy... take him to court. You've got a contract that he signed, right? You CAN'T let this loser fuck up your credit.

Ok ok ok...He just left for work, I had an insurance agent over...getting life insurance for $10.67/month FIXED (WOO WOO!)....while that was going on...he handed me his debit card and his pin, told me to go ahead and get the money out that was needed.

I guess this dilemma has diffused this month!!!

I'm happy again

I have a wife..
I never liked roommates..
I almost stabbed one I had before..
Just cause He was such a dick!!
Ive had one cool roommate my whole life and we did the same job and worked together..
Never had a problem...When I had to work nights he would be real quiet and leave most of the lights off in the house...pick up after himself...
Where have all these people gone?

hey, some advice... propose to her before you move in together OR at least let her know there's a plan to get married in X months/years.

She's going to get cranky when time drags on and nothing is happening :)

yeah, he's right^^. they've done studies, and couples that live together before getting married end up getting divorced more than couples that get married first.not to sound like a dick man, i mean you two may live together first and be perfectly happy for the rest of your lives!
