I was watching the news this morning at 0900 and they said that the Iranian elections were a success. They said as much as 95% turn out in some areas, also overall there was a 75% turnout through out the country. Lastly they said that this was a bigger turn out then any American election in history. Also, there was next to no resistance. I just thought this was great news. I wanted to share with you all...

What did you hear?

i heard more like 60-65% turnout... still better than most (maybe any) US election. We should be ashamed of ourselves.

Good for them though... let's hope the gov't doesn't turn to corruption.

yeah I heard fifty to sixty percent too. I think the seventy five percent number comes from only isolated areas.

still thats an extremely good turnout for a first election

Thats very impressive for a first election. i'd be suprised if the US has any election ever even close to that. i think the gov has failed at attracting the people here and they kind of lost interest and it seems that with every election it gets worse. I kno it's a democracy but we kind of don't see it as an asset anymore. US GOV gotta get their acts togetha.

his ashes are turning over in their resting place...Its more of a competition than a government. It was formed by the people for their needs and they can change it if they wish...shit we havent been able to change anything and its not about us anymore, I'ts about who has the most money and what would they like to see. Its really sad.

well, i think it's kind of funny that there are rules for making congressional/senatorial committees based on a 2-party system. (I could be slightly off) Also for who becomes "speaker of the house"... party with the majority?

I think all the rules need to be adjusted to negate the advantages parties have over independents. Maybe even something simple as not letting candidates declare their party affiliation at the voting stations. Man, that would throw the local elections into chaos :) Hardly anyone reads up on who's running for controller or district congress. That would eliminate the crap of just voting for party. You want to cast the correct vote? Well, then go read up on their views.

Here is a great article from Time on the elections and the coming governemnt:

http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1022720,00.html

Ending with "Iraq, or rather a large part of it, has spoken, no matter how imperfect the process. And as a result, the country's future appears to be up for grabs, with all players forced to rewrite their scripts. Now, it gets interesting."
