View Full Version : Music downloading?

Just curious as to what you guys think about the RIAA suing the crap out of everyone, and music downloading being illegal. I'll put my personal view later, cause it's going to take some typing, but just curious as to what you guys think.

It's theft. I do it, but I also buy the CDs I d/l MP3s for if I decide it's worth keeping, unless it's hard to get ahold of. Due to lack of funds, my MP3 collection is way ahead of my CD collection. But I do see it as stealing since you are getting something for free that should cost money.
The RIAA are doing things the wrong way IMO, just sueing people until they stop. I think it is wrong, but 2 wrongs don't make a right, for either side of the arguement.

Fuck the RIAA.
I really don't see the differnce between taping soemthing off the radio and downloading it. They need to just cut their losses, because they are gonna be making money regardless. They're just being greedy

The difference is Radio is legal through lisencing (spelling?!), royalties, and fair use rights. Now taping radio, believe it or not, I don't think has ever been legal, but at least artists are getting paid by radio companies to play their songs. Not to mention radio quality is low, like 32kBit instead of the average CD quality 128 or 192kBit MP3 you can download. Also, mp3s are digital whereas radio is analog, and both are governed by entirely different laws. The laws defining fair use of digital media are still being written and changed, and the entertainment industry is trying to castrate your right of transfering media digitally (ie, ripping MP3s). The problem here is DRM, or digital rights management, which is data held in the file itself that dictates how it can be burned, at what quality, if it can be copied, etc etc.
I will agree that the RIAA will make money regardless, they are robbing artists. And when you download an MP3 and never pay for it, so are you.

I personally think its wrong.....BUT then again buying a CD and finding out that only one song is good is shady shit. I should be able to listen to it before I buy. Here's my other beef I've bought a shitload of CD's over the years only to have them stolen...then bought to replace only to have stolen again. <---yeah SoCal rocks low life fucks anyways the way I see it is I bought that once already I should have unlimited access to it. I also think the price of CD's is right next to extortion especially considering the artists get little to no money. If a CD costs $15 and the band gets $1(if they're lucky) to me that's bull shit. To me the artist is getting ripped off anyway, I'll support'em by going to their shows.
Anyway I don't really download too much anymore because of all the fake shit out there. It's too much of a big of a pain in the ass. I was rocking the Kazzaa for awhile though. But I freely trade with friends & family.

I'm not a real big fan of artists.
They should be happy with the fact that they get paid to go out and have fun. They are greedy SOBs. If they really want to earn their money they can go out and get a real job.

i'm not into top40 bands at all, so my only chance to hear stuff is when a friend tells me to try out a particular group. I download the mp3 file and if it's ok, I might keep it. If it's awesome, I'll download more. I'm kind of 50/50 when it comes to buying a full album vs burning one from mp3s. Some CDs I need to buy because it's not popular.
I dunno... when I see crappy-ass no-talent clowns getting rich, it makes me think that it doesn't really matter. Those are the songs available on the net the most, yet they still make a crapload of money. It's the independent artists getting screwed. So I'll usually buy those.
Oh, yeah... I remember what my standards are... if I want to go see them in concert, that usually means I'll buy the album. Otherwise, it gets burned. I have all of Type O-Negative's albums... I'm not into gothic metal, but this band rocked and I went to one of their concerts, too :) scary stuff :)

alright, I have some time, so get ready to read. Here is my reason to say "Fuck the RIAA".
The RIAA hides behind the fact that it's stealing artists "property". There's a problem with that. Only the top bands, so we'll go with a figure of like 1% actually make money off of CDs. When bands record their cd's and albums, have promotions, and what not, someone has to pay for that. The RIAA offers that. nice, right? No. Because in contracts it states that the record company will take the money off of the cd sales, and the band will get money from the tours.
Another problem is that rap has turned it into this. I have nothing against rap at all, I love it, but someone has to pay for all the bling-bling. Again, the RIAA offers this. nice right? again, no. The rap artists have to pay that back with all of their cd sales. so it's not the artists "property" that they care about, they care about the fact that these C.E.O.'s can only have 4 bentley's instead of 5.
Another point: the record industy blames drop of CD sales on downloading. Wrong. When this all came to a head, there was a 7% drop in cd sales, BUT, a 14% rise in other entertainment areas. Movies, DVD's, video games and other forms of entertainment were all on the rise. People just don't care about music anymore because it's all cookie-cutter shit. It's designed to sell, and the public is realizing this. They'd rather spend their time doing something else.
The RIAA is not at all helping themselves suing old grandma's and little girls. (both of which they have sued. the grandma's grandkids were downloading on her computer and she didn't even know how to do it! yet they ripped i think 5000 from her because of it. the little girl lives with her single mother, and is 12. they sued them for like 6000 or something. they forced them both to make an embarrassing public apology. boy do they love their supposed customers).
someone mentioned small bands. the internet has been their one source of getting their music out to others, which poses a problem for the record industry. bands that they don't want to be around because they're not making the most money are taking away their sales.
Finally,I have not officially looked into this, but if i re
member correctly it's only illegal if you are sharing the music. not merely downloading.
but my view is, I say rape those bastards for all they're worth. I used to download to sample, which helped me to raise my rate of buying Cd's by 3 or 4 a month. but when this crap came out, i made it my personal duty to rip them off.

Downloading songs is stealing. I don't care how you justify it, shooting a child molester in the street will still get you murder charges. Thing is, no one has to own up to the moral implications, so they say "ha, I'm fucking the RIAA". No, no you're not. Both sides are wrong, the RIAA and downloaders. I don't mean to offend by any means, you're belief is your belief, I just stand by the principle regardless of the shit the RIAA pulls.
Let me make this clear, the RIAA needs to be gone. It does nothing for music and has no place in the world of music and technology. But it is an artists right to decide how their stuff is sold/distributed. There are people who think that getting more HP out of your car is useless and people shouldn't be paid to tune cars. I'm sure any people here with a job tuning/modifying cars would find that to be a shitty point of view and want to beat the piss out of them. Here's how I see it:
I play guitar. I have serveral friends who write music and want to make a career out of it. This is not easy, it is hard work to create a decent product. I'm not talking some britteny spears, someone else writes my music shit, but even those artists work their asses off for tours, shows, appearences. It looks like fun and games simply because they love doing it. To some people here, working on cars for a living would be a godsend, especially if it was the fun stuff of building, not repairing. So because you love your job you sholdn't get paid for it?
I'm a musician and a computer geek as well as a civic/car enthusiast, so I've put some thought into this and could talk for hours, but I'll cut it off here. Whether something is legal shouldn't matter, ripping people off (artists) who aren't involved with the lawsuits is BS in my opinion. Maybe thats just because I would love to be able to make money off my music, but its hard as hell and I have props for anyone that can do it (besides rap, which is mostly a favorites game, not much skill).
Sonny7730
01-13-2005, 06:12 PM
But that's my point, it isn't ripping off the artists. if you want to help the artists, go to their shows. buy the merch at the shows. that's helping the band out. and trust me, I look at it from both points of views. I have been in 3 bands, and all 3 times we gave out CD's. why? to get our music out to people. I couldn't care less if I made money of playing my bass, cause I know if i get famous, it's because I'm lucky. skill hardly has anything to do with it anymore. how many bands do you hear that you like so much more that are not signed?
don't get me wrong, I respect you're opinion, and to a point I totally agree with you that one shouldn't wrong because they were wronged, but I myself just don't like sitting by while I get ripped off 15 bucks for one song, and single cd's are still 7 or 8 bucks.

mIrC ownz! i can get any prog i want pretty much - everything from windows server 2003, photoshop, win xp pro, windows longhorn, halo 2 for xbox, xbox emus, visual basic stuff, games (need for speed 2, tony hawk underground 2, etc), heck i could even get halflife 2 about a week before it was released...
aside from the point, i was using music city back in the day, n then they moved to kazaa, and now kazaa lite, but it's harder to find quality songs nowadays, there's more with limewire nowadays. But you wanna know the "legal" way to download music?
Go get napster. Go get the 7-day free trial. If you have more than 1 card, just make more accounts when 1 runs out, so if you have 4 cards, you can whore the whole month of february from napster. Download like a whore, download every song off them that you want in your free trial period. When trial is about to end, cancel. The songs are still there, in full format, and you can play them through windows media. However, you can't burn them! No problem! They are high quality songs right? Just bust out with Cool Edit Pro 2.0 and hit the record button, and then make a playlist of the songs you want, and hit the play button. Then after the songs are done playing, go back, split the sound file apart, and save as separate mp3s. Takes a little work and time, but you download "legally" and you always get high quality songs!

High five on circumventing the DRM, but that is illegal and punishable. But, I think there's no way to prove it really...
CADD? What program? I've used AutoCAD R12, AutoCAD R14, AutoCAD 2000, AutoCAD 2002, Autodesk Mechanical Desktop (This program OWNS you), and Autodesk Inventor (like MD, but easir constraints, less capability). Easy to learn, just play around and learn how to think in 3D. If anyone needs help or has questions about these programs, PM me, I'm pretty decent but out of practice.
Back on topic, let me knock myself down a notch and say that I have 5400+ mp3s in my collection. 30% paid for, 40% underground-ish, or was when I d/led it. The rest, well... I love music, it overtakes principle sometimes. Good point about show's and merchandise, but there are plenty of people who sell CDs for money is all I'm saying. I pay artists how I can. I don't buy merch, I don't need it, in fact I don't want it. All I care about is music, so I buy CDs and go to shows. But I also like having a CD collection. Having 5400+ MP3s is great and I defend my collection like a mutant junkyard dog, but I still love having a good CD collection.

I also used to be in a local band and we were just so damn chuffed that people were listening to our stuff, before we stopped playing, we had some of our stuff on MP3 and would send ppl links to where they could download it for free, if they liked our stuff, they could buy the CD at one of our gigs for about R30-00 from which we made R20-00, we used a local record company to do distribution for us after a while cause it was just too much work for us to do. The same CD was then selling for R90-00 and we saw R13-00 from each CD.........Either way you look at it, the artist is loosing out from what we actually pay for the CD's.......If they get the music out to the masses and you think that shit rocks, then next time they come into town you'll wanna go.
Went to go watch counting crows a while back.......Spent R230 a ticket to go watch with my gf, spent another R200 on 2 T-shirts and bought some personal shit for another R100. THAT benefits them.........NOT the record company. BTW......there was 27 000 people there that night...go to shows......screw CD sales...........oh and yeah......kazaa loves my ass.

YOU BASTARD!!! i've been trying to find someone with autocad for ages, use to have it but had to wipe the hard drive, and since you can't copy the actual CD, I was SOL. hook me up...please?
my take on downloading, use to do it...stopped, and have been thinking about doing it again. i refuse to pay 15 dollars for a CD that took ~ a buck to make. yes i know the CD itself is only worth like 20 cents maybe...but i took into account the electricity for the recording studio and the CD making equipment. if CD's cost what they should cost, i would buy the CD's, but i'm a lazy bastard and would go to the store and get the CD with case and words and everything instead of working to find it all. honestly the cost of CD's is so inflated it's NUTS!!! if what sonny said is true and the artist don't see any money from the CD sales, i swear i'll NEVER buy a CD for myself again, it's retarted, if i buy something i want to the money to go to the artist, not the company that is sueing everyone.
just my .02
P.S. no i don't think it is illegal to download music if the artist isn't getting any money out of it, hell if it wasn't for them RIAA, or who ever, would not even exist. so i think that the RIAA company is illegal as a whole, frankly if the artist is making the music, and works for it...then they should get paid for it. i mean hell mechanics don't give all there money to outside vendors do they? so why should the artist HAVE to? maybe i'm looking at this from a moral stand point *shrug*
