The DOHC ZC ya gotta think was developed WAAAYYY back in like 1984-1985

When SOHC VTEC became available, the DOHC ZC was considered "old" and ceased production.

The DOHC ZC has been given a bad rap, but it's still a good engine.

i am curious too. Which is faster, or prefered? and why did the ZC get a bad rap?

First off...the blacktop ZC doesn't make 135hp like a lot pf people will claim. It makes 130ps or 128 hp to you and me. That's negligible over a sohc vtec hp output. So...127 hp fairly new, fresh D16y8 or 128 hp old ZC. Hmmm. Tough choice.

The dohc ZC was a dead end in the D-series evolutionary path. Not to say it wasn't good, just that something else better replaced it. Survival of the fittest.

OT...just curious in which is faster...your 4wd zc wagon or your b18si

duh...my crx :) especially with 235-50-13 race rubber. It's lighter, has more power and geared for acceleration.

The wagon, however, is more fun in the rain and you can load it up like a fat man at a buffet.

i had a d16z6 in my 91 hatchback, i/h/e.. a friend had a DOHC ZC in his 89 Si (lighter) i/e... i beat him by barely a car length.

i would say they are fairly equal, provided they have equal wear..

The ZC eventually evolved into the B18A1. If you take the valve cover off, they look almost identical.

they made 92-95 dohc zc's obd1
and 96+ obd2 dohc zc's in japan.

so yea... im not sure what they do
now that they flipped the engines
and went d17..., your guess is as
good as mine.

Its DOHC that's all I need to say, but with the SOHC you get the VTEC system so its all up to the buyer. I believe that the DOHC is an easier swap because you don't have to mess with the VTEC system. Im not a pro on Vtec's though.

I had a zc in my 90 dx hb and I sold it and bought a 92 cx hb i swapped a sohc vtec into my eg and honestly they both run about the same. The zc is notorious for spinning rod bearings from what I have been told. In my case I ran the dirt out of my motor for 2.5 years and it never failed me once. just my .02 hope it helps

IMO stick with the zc or d16a1...that is if you want to keep stock. but the SOHC VTEC has a lot more tuning options if you want to go fast.

ok...i just got the ZC running recently

obd1 dohc zc VS d15b7 with z6 head and i/h/e and cam gear tuned

the zc is just as quick as the minime with all the bolt ons and has a little more torque

with the same amount of mods, the zc is faster, but the sohc has more potential.....who cares, i'm gonna be boosting anyways  :P

after some tuning and more time to play around with the zc....i honestly think itll take a stock b16....the zc is ALOT faster than my sohc vtec and my friend's. This motor has alot of potential!!! ....it even makes power at 7k rpm unlike my sohc  can't wait till i boost :x

my opinion if it matters........

Need a simple drop in motor for a 88-91 Civic/CRX, go DOHC ZC.

Other than that, SOHC forever. More parts on the market.

i have a 04 civic ex d17 w/ i/h/e i raced a ef w/ zc getto rig intake headers exhaust...well i beat him off the line and was like 2 car lengths away and he started 2 creep slowly sooo i think the d17 would b a better choice
