So, winter is coming up sooner than any of us want to admit. And what do we do when it's snowy outside? Build engines! So, my thought is to make a little high compression monster that's streetable, and can run on pump gas.
Originally I was just thinking of putting d16a1 pistons into my d16z6... The few compression calculators I've found shoot it up to 13.4:1 or so... Safe on 91 octane? eh.... Not sure I want to have to worry about it all the time.

Second option, go with an old d15b7 block I have laying around, and rebuild that with the d16a1 pistons. That would yeild about 13:1. Safer, but still 91 octane freindly?

And will the d16a1 pistons work with the z6 rods just fine? Or would I be better off with the \teg rods? I can't seem to find the stoke length on an a1, so depending on prices, I might just buy up everything in sight and go nuts.

Any insight on your personal setups, or experience would be great. Just want to know what I should be looking for before it's too cold to go junkyard diving.

The A1 has the same stroke geometry as the Z6. It has a 75mm bore with a 90mm stroke. You can use the rods if you want to, but the strength isn't going to be too different than the rods you have now.

As for compression, all results I've gotten from compression calculators AND doing the math myself show 12.0:1 to 12.3:1 compression with P29 (A1) or PM7 (DOHC ZC) pistons in a Z6 engine. You can run that on 91 octane if you tune it well. I wouldn't go anywhere near 13.4:1 on pump gas though- that's getting a little high.

Can you even put D16 pistons in a D15, I don't think so. If it's possible, I guess I am doing it!!!

Yep, Go for ZC pistons

Well hell, that is soundsing awesome. But the z6 rods definitely fit the p29 wrist pins?

According to the c/r calculator it wild yield a 12.2:1 which is a lill high... But fuckit I'm doing it!!! :D

I'm pretty sure that all the D series wrist pins are 17mm, except for the GX pistons which use 19mm pins. GX pistons with LS rods would be great in a Y8 though, since they're already set up for 12.5:1 compression in the Y8 block.. and the LS rods use 19mm pins.

I ran 12.6:1 compression in my B20/VTEC with 92-93 octane pump gas. You can handle 12.2:1 with some good tuning.

So, what's the easiest way to make the Ls pistons witht he p28 rods? You're saying the wrist pinds are differnet sizes? Correct?

Pin sizes- as far as I know, yes. I was wrong on the previous measurements though- I believe that the B series pins are 21mm while the D series are 19mm. GX pistons are 21mm. You can get a bushing made to fit the D series pistons on the B series rods. The rod/crank journals are the same diameter between the D16 and the B series cranks, so you spec out your rod bearings as you normally do.

You don't want to put LS pistons on D series rods though- that won't fit in your engine. You want to put D series pistons on LS rods, not the other way around. Just remember that you'll probably have to notch your block to get the larger rods to clear on the bottom end of the sleeve.

Ok, now I keep forgetting to ask, what are GX pistons?

Can i use the d16z5! pistons in order to get hi-compression??? I've a D16z6 runing for now and a D16z5 motor at my garage!
