View Full Version : Doom3 is boring

Doom 3 is really pretty, but it's rather boring. Plus, I'm annoyed that my Athlon XP1800 (which is equivalent to a p4 2.1 Ghz) with Radeon 9000 All in wonder can only play the game smoothly at the lowest resolution.
Whatever happened to the good old days when programmers optimized their code and wrote in assembly?
I remember those 10k demos floating around in the 90s from contests. Only 10 kbytes and these programmers could do some really amazing shit. 3D spaceships flying around buildings w/ music. Unbelieveable.

I finally beat the game..
I dont think I'll be playing it anymore. It's like a one time game. that once you beat it, you wont look back into playing the same thing over and over again.
I think you need a ATI 9600 and up to play decent in doom 3
I have a 9800 pro and I could only play at medium setting.

this game isn't optimized enough, the general brightness of game is poor. graphic is so nice, but like you said, powerfull computer is needed :(
This game is a stress, I dislike it. Maybe it's better in network game but for now, boring.

yes! the brightness was killing me! I turned up the gamma on my adapter and still couldn't see clearly. I know parts were meant to be in the dark, but practically the whole game was like that.
My favorite 1st person shooter has to be Unreal (not Tournament... the original story mode game). Halo is very good too, but the levels could have been better.

i think i'd much rather play halo - but something with awesome multiplayer support always makes the game fun to play after the single-player portion is over
also games where you can make custom maps/levels, have different clans, lots of different team playing modes, etc etc
yum :P

Doom is the future of gaming. If your PC can't handle it tough shit! How can we ask for better games and superior technology without demanding better equipement to run it? I think for the QUALITY of the graffix it far succeeds my expectations and system needs. Its pure genius. The sound, the lighting I found it to be one of the best damn games created to this date. PERIOD!
You might as well post in the FI section and bitch about your car not being able to handle 20psi wtf?#@!! They should have build D motors to handle higher boost hah see where I'm going with this?

I think Doom 3's graphics are excellent... and I know my video card is a little old, but I expected a little more than MINIMUM resolution. I'm talking 640x480, lowest detail. I think that programmers get lazy because there always IS something new that will let them take shortcuts in programming. I know that they could optimize their code (or even try a better language than whatever they're using) to make things faster. And, yes, I know video cards are a major bottleneck, but then again when they started designing Doom3, my video card was a hot item...
Check out www.scene.org for some EXCELLENT examples of graphics/audio programming. These are all hobbyists who push the envelopes of hardware and software by designing new routines (usually in assembly... machine code) to generate new effects. Some of the stuff is crazy... they all have big contests...

... I could use the same argument most people give and say that if your car is tuned properly, you can do a lot of things that would normally break a block. Sure, there are limits..

Your PC should be able to run it higher than that. Either you have a bazillion things running in the backround using up your resources or machine is infected with a trojan/virus/spam/spyware etc... It runs good on my old rig that doesnt even meet MIN specs:
GF4 TI4400
AMD T-Bird 1.3 oc'd to 1.54ghz
1gig pc-133
SBLive-Xgamer
Thats slow if you ask me. It runs great at 800x600 on Medium quality. hmmm I'd do a benchmark on your rig something doesnt compute.

Doom 3 is stessful - I will agree to that - I only feel like playing it for about an hour at a time and I have to take a break because I've been on edge the whole time. The sound is awesome and even though my graphics card sucks and I have to play it on it's lowest resolution it still plays smoothly. It's a great single player first person shooter - better for first person gaming then the first one because the enviroments are so engrossing.
You turned your brightness up? No wonder you're bored with it - there's no surprises cause you can see everything - USE THE FLASHLIGHT! That's why you have one! It's like when I hear about people getting a new game and then getting the cheating codes for it and then they bitch cause they got bored of the game after a week - well no wonder - the fun is in the challenge, by cheating you remove the challenge. It's not suppossed to be this great multiplayer game - if that's what ID had been out for that's what they would have done. It's suppossed to be an awesome game to play on single player and watch because they put so much time into it.
I had to take a break from Doom 3 this weekend and play some turismo. I love Gran Turismo.

I have all the driver updates. Definitely, no viruses or trojans... just a bunch of shit installed that I don't need. MSN is a waste...
To the other guy... I TRIED turning up the brightness, but it didn't work. It's just black. Of course, there are times when you need the flashlight... but sometimes the rooms are well lit... STILL, those well lit rooms are not well enough lit to appreciate the detail in the background! Kind of annoying... I'll have to admit, I have low tolerance for games. They're either awesome or I get bored after a day or so.
For example, FFX2 was one of the first final fantasy games I got bored with. Too repetitive (same with Doom3). The only, only repetitive game besides GT3 I am addicted to is GunBound. i can't get enough of that game... :)
OOOHH... I just remembered something. The BEST 1st person shooter out there currently has to be Metroid PRIME for the Gamecube. Now, THAT game is a unique take on a 1st person shooter.

Well makku - I won't hold it against you for thinking doom 3 is boring because you mentioned the best game ever (GT3) - at least until GT4 comes out. Not to hijack your thread but this is an interesting article
http://ps2.gamespy.com/playstation-2/gran-turismo-4/533774p1.html
pages 11 and 12 are the closest thing I can find to a cars list - even though there's only around 260 cars listed and there is suppossed to be 500 in the end.

wow, photo mode is such a gay idea... yet it looks so good!
I can't wait to buy this game... I think it will be my first new ps2 game in like 3 years

Squad, any of those "complete" lists official? if so add a link...
Best part of the article:
"Gran Turismo 4 will include the famous and rather lengthy Nurburgring. It remains to be seen if gamers will be able to handle its 13-mile laps. The most beautiful part of all is that the track has been created to be as accurate as possible; reports state that the in-game track is nearly identical to its real-world counterpart with no more than 15mm of discrepancy at any given point."

Makku, what ati driver are you using?.
Ati came out with a cat 4.9 beta, especially design for doom3 performance.
And make sure on the display options, you turn off fastwrites, AA anf AF in open gl and 3d settings tabs.
Also the doom3 engine would be used for other upcoming games. like call of duty2 and a few more. So to really enjoy these games you should be looking towards an upgrade or just build a better computer..
The only problem with doom3 imo, is not the engine their using, but gameplay gets verry repetetive over and over again, and you cant play at all without using the flashlght all the time..
and for GT4, the release date is this November.. try and join our site http://gt4.chashost.com/forum/ where we will try to play online on a same server.. so far we only have 7 members:crying:

Drivers 0wn j00. I can run it on Ultra with no problem. Ati 9600 Pro 256Mb I snagged off of ebay for $120. Had it overclocked a while back, but heat became an issue, so i'm holding off on trying that again until i get the final elements complete of the liquid cooling system for my rig. :p I think it was a very good game. I can't wait for the mods to come out in floods now. :D
