View Full Version : Valve Stem Seal Problem

I have just installed other head on my car. I f**ked up installing the new valve stem seals by forgetting to put bottom spring retainer on first. So i carefully took them off then reinstalled them and thought i would risk it.
and now the car it is burning a lot of oil and producing white smoke. the smoke is worse 6)when deaccelerating. the compression is 195psi (D16Z6) across all cylinders.

Do you think this could all be down to the valve stem seals?

It very well could be, but I don't believe it should be that bad.

Almost sounds like you got some valve seat issues.

could you please explain what you mean by valve seat issues. as all the valve did come out the head. Why could the valve seats cause it to burn oil and smoke? the valve guides were ground back a bit to my friend when porting the head. bad valve seats should have shown up on the compression test right?????????

I pulled the injectors and you can see it is oily in there. I then pulled the header and looked up the ports and you can see a tiny run of oil from the bottom of the valve guide. So it has got to be either valve guide or seals. They where a patten part valve stem seal as honda ones are £80 over here. you get a cheap option and an expensive option over there here they are all the same price. think i may pull the head and swap my uprated cam and springs over on to the old head i took off. That only kicked out a bit of smoke if you gave it death changing gear. Is that valve seals? do i risk not changing the valve seals on the old head???????????

Your valves and valve seats are very strong surfaces and need to be some what perfect in shape as far as how the actual valve relates tot he valve seat. Any imperfections will allow combustion to pass by.

While doing a compression test, you are only testing the pressure built up in a cylidner, not combustion pressure. Think about it, 195 psi is what you are getting from a compression test, actual combustion pressure is far above that. This means that your valves would not neccessarily show air passing by them from a regular compression test, unless there is a lot of room for air to pass around them.

why would your fuel injectors be oily if it is your valve stem seals?

and i thought that if you are burning oil it's a bluish smoke...i could be wrong on that one.

the valve seat doesn't explain to me why he's burning up whatever he's burning, i thought the valve seat, valves, piston rings, and head gasket affects the compression test
